

Warren William “Nick” Kennedy of Kansas City, Missouri died peacefully on Thursday, August 21, 2014 in his home at the age of 88. He was born on January 7, 1926 in Kansas City, Missouri. Nick lived with Florence (Brown) and Charles “Jake” Hoffman from the age of 6 months and called them Mom and Dad.
He graduated from Central High School in Kansas City in 1943 and served in the US Army from 1944-1946 during WWII. After the army he joined the family business with his father at Chicago Kansas City Freight Line later changed to CKC Freight Line. He worked there until 1981 when the business was sold and he started Kennedy Equipment Sales, Inc. until retirement in 1993.
He is preceded in death by his foster parents Florence and Charles and a sister Beverly Hoffman.
Nick is survived by his wife of 68 years Joanne A. (Simmons) Kennedy, foster brother Charles J. Hoffman, and five children Diane (Robert) Hansen of Wentzville, Missouri, Frederick (Linda) Kennedy of Circleville, Ohio, William (Karen) Kennedy of Columbia, Missouri, Douglas (Janice) Kennedy of St. Cloud, Florida, and Kathleen (Michael) Roberts of Lee’s Summit, Missouri. Nick had eighteen grandkids Karen (Loren) Ahaus, Robby Hansen, Ken Hansen, Kristy (Chase) Franklin, Andy (Kristina) Kennedy, Craig (Kim) Kennedy, Beth (Sky) Kosobud, Sarah (Dom) Correggio, Amy (Alex) Junk, Emily (Tommy) Mattimoe, Josh (Elizabeth) Kennedy, Joy (John ) Kauffman, David (Sarah) Kennedy, Daniel (Allison) Kennedy, Colin Peter, Bradley Roberts, Caleb Peter, and Kelci Peter. Nick also has twenty-two great-grandkids.
Nick lived a full life and was active in many organizations. He was a lifelong member of former Randolph United Methodist Church from 1957-2003 then became a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in 2003 until his death. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America as a boy and as an adult from 1957 until his death. He was a member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say where he served as Chief Running Wheel in 1984. He loved to visit the H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation each summer. Nick served on the Board of Directors for Goodwill Kansas City from 1968-2011 (43 years) and also on the board of Kingswood Senior Living Community from its beginning in 1981 until 2010 (29) years. He was president of The Operations Council of American Trucking Association and held several positions in the local Highway Carriers Association.
Visitation will be held at Mt. Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri on Sunday, August 24 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. A Boy Scout Tribe of Mic-O-Say ceremony will take place at 7:30 p.m. during the visitation. Funeral services will be on Monday, August 25, at 11:00 a.m. at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 350 SW 150 Highway, Lee’s Summit, Missouri. Burial in Mount Moriah Cemetery South.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Boy Scouts Heart of America Council for the Degenfelder-Kennedy Endowed Chapel Fund at H. Roe Bartle Boy Scout Reservation or Aldersgate United Methodist Church Youth Ministries in Nick’s name.
