William “Bill” Herrington was born on November 11, 1958, in Arlington, Virginia, to Raymond and Mary (Wier) Herrington. The family later made their home at Lake Lotawana, Missouri, where Bill graduated from Lee’s Summit High School in 1977.
In 1982, Bill began a long and fulfilling career at Kansas City Power & Light, where he proudly served for 35 years. Rising through the ranks from SOE to Senior Manager of Substation Transmission and Relay, Bill took great pride in his role maintaining the electric grid across the region. His dedication to the work was matched only by his deep appreciation for his colleagues, many of whom became lifelong friends.
Bill was a devoted father to his daughter Rachel, born in 1979, and son Daniel, born in 1983. He cherished time spent with his children and grandchildren, especially watching them learn to swim in his backyard pool.
A lover of the outdoors, Bill found peace and joy at his property near Trenton, Missouri, where he built a cabin by hand and welcomed friends and family for gatherings. He had a passion for astronomy and spent many evenings stargazing with his telescope, sharing the wonders of the night sky with those around him.
Bill had an incredible ability to love unique and eccentric music, and he delighted in sharing it with his friends. He also worked with his hands to create thoughtful and beautifully crafted metal works—pieces that many will treasure for years to come.
Bill was known for his kindness, generosity, and unwavering friendship. He touched many lives with his warmth and sincerity.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Mary. He is survived by his loving wife, Beth Herrington; his sisters Brenda Burns and Polly Williams; his brother Mike (Lori) Herrington; his children Rachel Belknap and Daniel (Kasey) Herrington; and his grandchildren Xan, Zoe, and Lincoln. Bill also leaves behind many dear friends, cousins, nephews, nieces, aunts, and uncles.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Bill’s friends for their support and compassion during the past month, and to the dedicated doctors and nurses at St. Joseph Medical Center and KU Medical Center.
A celebration of Bill’s life will be held on Thursday, November 13, 2025, at McGilley State Line Chapel. Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM, followed by a service at 2:00 PM.
Bill will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
