Known to most people as Bill, he was born January 8, 1938, on a farm near Walnut, Kansas to George Robert and Bertha May (Eble) Mitchell. The youngest of seven children, he worked on the family farm until graduating from Walnut High School in 1955. Shortly after graduation he moved to Kansas City, MO where he met his future wife. He and Carmelita Frances Zondca were united in marriage on February 8, 1958.
Bill took classes at IBM to become a computer programmer. He built a career and a business in the Computer and Technology revolution, ultimately retiring in 1999. Bill was an avid KU Basketball fan and loved watching his Jayhawks play. He also enjoyed watching Royals baseball and Chiefs football. Throughout the years, there were many weekend trips to Southeast Kansas to see family, fish, play dominoes and cards, but all of those activities were secondary to teasing nieces and nephews. Above all else, Pawpaw loved to spend time with his grandbabies and great-grandbabies. He loved taking the grandkids and great-grandkids for a walk to the creek to throw rocks, tending the garden, playing dominoes, looking for wild life, and bird watching.
Bill leaves behind his wife Carmelita, and five children Edward Mitchell, David Mitchell, Richard (Pam) Mitchell, Gary (Shelly) Mitchell, and Sheri Espinosa, all of whom live in the Kansas City area. He also leaves behind grandchildren Gloria Devonshire (Jake Ludemann), Stephanie Vint, Carrisa (Randy) Stewart, Matthew Mitchell, Allison Mitchell, Rebecca Mitchell, Tyler Espinosa, Aidan Espinosa, Alyssa Espinosa and Kiera Espinosa and great-grandchildren Jackson and Colton Vint and Briley and Harper Stewart. Also surviving are two sisters, Dorothy Ricketts of Erie, KS and Clara Jackson of Bella Vista, AR, four sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life is being planned for May 27, 2023, in Southeast Kansas. Memorial contributions may be made to: City Union Mission https://cityunionmission.org/give/donate-5/ or Walnut Alumni Scholarship Fund, c/o Nancy Ward, 204 S. 5th, St. Paul, KS 66771.
