Ana Maria was born January 16, 1949 in Valdivia, Chile to Francisco Aliro Barrios Santander and Maria Amalia Vargas Vargas. She graduated from the Instituto Comercial de Valdivia in 1969. On September 13, 1969, she married Brian Edward Dent. They moved to the United States that same year and settled in Stanford, California. While her husband studied at Stanford, Ana worked as a key punch operator for Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. In 1982 she graduated from The University of Tulsa with her Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. She worked as a programmer for Cities Service Company and later Wilbros Butler Engineers in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In 1984, Ana and her husband moved to East Grinstead, England. Ana worked as a junior programmer for Digital Exploration. In 1985, they returned to the US and settled in Houston, Texas. In August 1988, Ana and Brian welcomed their only child Maria. In 1991, the family moved to Dhahran, Saudi Arabia where she worked in the epidemiology department for Saudi Aramco. While living in Dhahran, she was an active member of the Dhahran Squash Club. In 2003, the family returned to the United States and settled in Katy, Texas; she became an active member in multiple women’s groups including the Chilean Ladies Group, Grand Lakes Ladies Club, and Cinco Ranch Ladies Club. Her passions included travel, squash, shopping, jewelry, cooking, crochet, arts and crafts.
Ana Maria Dent was preceded in death by her parents; sister-in-law Sonya, sister-in-law Sheila, and brother-in-law Theodore. She leaves behind a loving husband of 52 years Brian Dent of Katy, TX; daughter Maria Irene Dent of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates; brother Jose Guillermo Muñoz Muñoz of Concepcion, Chile; brother Francisco Guillermo Barrios Vargas and wife Grunhilde of Valdivia, Chile; brother Miguel Alfredo Barrios Vargas and wife Nancy of San Jose de la Mariquina, Chile; Juana Maria Barrios Vargas and husband Juan Francisco of Quilpue, Chile.
Ana was a beautiful, loving, kind wife, mother, sister, and friend to all who knew her. She will be greatly missed by all those who met her.
The Dent family would like to give special thanks to the care of Dr. Sachin Patel, Dr. Stuart Soloman, Dr. Neil Sutaria, and the nursing staff who cared for her at Houston Methodist Hospital.
