Betty Sue Winters (1937 – 2020) of Katy, Texas passed away on July 10th, 2020 at Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital. Betty was born in Chase, Kansas on March 29, 1937 to Susie and Wayne Clark. Betty grew up in Odessa, Texas where she met her husband of 63 years Jimmie George ‘JG’ in high school. As a high school cheerleader and the senior class crowned ‘Miss OHS’, it was all JG could do but sweep Betty off her feet. Betty and JG moved throughout the US but found their forever home in Houston, TX where they lived for over 40 years. Betty, the homemaker, raised their three daughters and son encouraging them in their studies, passions, and most importantly their walk with Jesus Christ. Alongside raising her children, Betty had two driving passions in life: serving Jesus and sharing His love with everyone she encountered, and flowers. Betty ran her flower business, Winters Creations, out of her home – she was affectionately known for her beautiful centerpieces and her ability to elevate every event she was hired for.
Throughout her life, Betty was known best for how she extended her love to everyone she encountered. She loved on 5th graders through teaching them Sunday School for over 20 years. She loved her peers through women’s bible studies. She loved women in her community through weekly bridge games and her membership in Fonn Villas Women’s Club. She loved her siblings through calling them often and creating unique bonds with each of their children, her adored nieces and nephews. And she loved her own family – attending nearly every sports game of her grandkids, producing giant Christmas celebrations (keeping the same traditions each year), cherished phone calls, and most importantly through words of encouragement and wisdom. Betty spread her love with unabandon and treated each encounter with others as if may be a divine appointment set by our Heavenly Father.
Betty is survived by her loving family: sister, Daisy VanZandt of College Station; brother, Don and Nelda Clark of Odessa; daughter, Julie and Wray Rives of Coppell; daughter, Janet and Greg Burkett of Katy; daughter, Judi and Dan Post of Katy and son, Jimmy and Leisa Winters of Katy. She was affectionately known as “Granny” to her eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren: Josh and Mindy Rives and their three girls, Lucy Kate, June Marie, and Ruby Claire, Wes Rives, Jacob and Corrinne Rives, Brett Burkett, Blake and Erin Burkett, Lexie Cawley, Conner and Brittany Cawley and their daughter Camden Elizabeth, Jeff and Jessica Post, Brandon Post, MacKenzie Winters and Maci Winters. She joins her husband JG, her parents, her three older sisters and two older brothers through the pearly gates of Heaven.
A socially distanced Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday July 15th, 2020 at 10:00 AM at Tallowood Baptist Church (555 Tallowood Drive, Houston). There will be no reception at the family’s request. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Tallowood Baptist Church – Church Planting, in Betty Winters’ memory.
