Beverly Gladen Gorin passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 19, 2026 at the age of 96. He was born in Waco, Texas to Charles and Angeline Gorin. He and his family moved to Austin, Texas when he was one. He was named after his two grandfathers, but he never liked his name! He went by “Bev” in school, later in life as “B. G.”, and was lovingly called “Poppy” by his 3 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Bev graduated from Austin High School in 1948. He played shortstop on the Austin Maroon baseball team and was also on a club baseball team for the American League. He was a member of the Franklin Debate Society fraternity in high school. No debates occurred but lots of fraternity socializing! After graduation Bev signed up for the naval reserves for three years. He was never called up, but attended weekly meetings and went on a 2-week cruise every summer. The first summer he went to Miami which was his first time to travel out of Texas. The next year the cruise went to Havana, Cuba which he said was quite the adventure!
After high school Bev continued playing semi-pro baseball for the Yoakum Tanners and for a short time for a team in Brenham.
Austin High School is also where he met his wife, Jorene. As high school sweethearts they were married on February 16, 1951 and were married for 70 years until Jorene’s death in 2021. They raised two children , Christy and Scott.
After high school Bev attended the University of Texas majoring in physics but quit after two years to marry Jorene. He then attended and graduated from Dixon-Clay Commercial College while working at Austin National Bank (now Bank of America). He started as a bank teller and retired in 1993 as Vice President and Trust Administrative Officer after 42 years.
During that time with the bank he attended Northwestern University’s National Trust School earning a degree equivalent to a master’s degree.
Bev is preceded in death by his wife Jorene, parents Charles and Angeline Gorin, brother Charles Perry Gorin, brother-in-law Dick Wooten, and son-in-law Keith Lehtinen.
He is survived by his son Scott Gorin, daughter Christy Lehtinen, grandchildren Kelli Beck (husband Joe), Ryan Lehtinen (wife Lindsey), and Shannon Tautenhahn (husband Brock) and 8 great-grandchildren Logan & Cooper Beck, Noelle, Hudson & Britt Lehtinen, Finley, Jolie, & Annie Tautenhahn, nieces Debra Thomas (Jerry), Kathy Waligore (Mike), Cheri Jones (David) and nephew Terry Wooten.
After Jorene’s death Bev sold his home of 53 years in Austin at age 92 and moved to Katy, Texas to be closer to his daughter and her family . He made many wonderful friends in his Atria Retirement Center during the remainder of his life. He enjoyed its activities, especially Happy Hour entertainment twice a week and bingo! He was also an “ambassador “ on the board to greet new residents.
Bev’s (aka B.G. & Poppy) life was devoted to his family and many friends throughout the years. He was an avid golfer and Texas Longhorns fan cheering on the football, baseball, volleyball and softball teams specifically! He will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved him!
