March 25, 1937 —July 14,2021
EMMITT CLAYTON MADDUX, 84,of Katy,Texas, passed from this earthly life to his new heavenly home on Wednesday, July 14, 2021 in a COVID-19 isolation room on the Intermediate Care Unit of Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital surrounded by some of the compassionate staff who had cared for him. He was born in Holland, Texas on March 25, 1937 to Emmitt Cluster Maddux and Sally Margaret Maddux. They later moved to Houston, where he grew up and lived most of his life.
Larry, a lifelong friend, described Clayton as one of the hardest working individuals he ever knew, beginning when he was a young boy with a bicycle paper route. Even at that early age, Clayton wanted to be independent and earn his own money, and he bought his own clothes from that time forward. He and his friend spent many carefree weekends hunting along the bayous and vacant land that later became a busy part of Houston. During his high school years, Clayton enjoyed boxing and won a championship for his weight class at a Golden Gloves Tournament in the 1950's. The friend recalled that Clayton, when training for boxing, got up early every morning and ran five miles before attending classes at San Jacinto High School. In his younger years, Clayton enjoyed hunting, fishing, and bowling; later he became more interested in golf.
Clayton worked for Frito-Lay (now a subsidiary of PepsiCo) for 26 years in various positions. He was very
competitive and earned their National Rookie of the Year Award. He was affiliated with Farmers Insurance for 28 years and owned Clayton Maddux Insurance Agency, where he appreciated and cared for his clients. A box in the attic holds dusty trophies and plaques that he was awarded for various achievements during his life.
Clayton will be remembered most for loving people, wanting to help them, and trying to make them laugh with his corny jokes. He loved God and always looked forward to being with his church family at Central Baptist Church, where he was a member, as well as dear friends at a weekly Bible Study he attended when able.
Clayton was preceded in death by his parents, younger brother, David Allen Maddux (killed in Vietnam), and son, John Allan Maddux.
Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Carolyn Jean Maddux; daughter Marianne Smith (Stanley); daughter-in-law Pamela Diane Maddux; brother Ronald Thomas "Tom" Maddux (Dorcas); sister Carol Margaret King (Wayne); grandchildren Bryan Christopher Maddux (Kelly), Sarah Heather Kerr (Dave), Jeremy David Maddux (Shanon), Christopher Mack Wyles (Stormy), Annalisa Taylor Lord (Gregory); great-grandchildren Brody John Maddux, Kylar Diana Maddux, Cailin Elise Kerr, Heather Lynn Kerr, Taylor Yvonne Wyles, David Aaron Smith Lord, Nathan Jesse Lord, Matthew Christopher Lord, and twins Forrest David Maddux and Lane McLeod Maddux.
