Daniel G. Kitt was born on May 14, 1937, in Kenora, Ontario, Canada. He received his early education in Canada and, after graduating from high school, began a lifelong journey in naval architecture and marine engineering. He pursued his studies at the Royal Canadian Naval Technical School in Ottawa and later continued hands-on training at the HMC Dockyard in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Dan’s distinguished career began in 1957 with the Department of Naval Defence in Canada. He went on to work in both public and private sectors, contributing to major shipyards across North America—including Yarrow’s Ltd. in Victoria, National Steel & Shipbuilding Co. in San Diego, Avondale Shipyard in New Orleans, and Todd Shipyard in Houston.
He joined Zapata Offshore in 1972 as a Senior Naval Architect, ultimately becoming Chief Project Engineer. Dan played a critical role in the design and development of offshore rigs and semi-submersibles, including the Zapata Ugland 4-SS-2000. He held patents for multiple marine innovations such as the Zapata CS connector, the HomcoKitt hook, and the Kittwood fendering system.
In later years, he worked with Armco International and Salen Protexa Drilling Co., where he managed engineering projects and new rig construction globally, including units built in Finland for the USSR. He eventually served as Senior Project Specialist at Transocean Offshore Inc. in Houston.
Dan was a member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, and the American Society for Metals. His career was marked by leadership, innovation, and deep technical expertise. He also dedicated time to mentoring and facilitating knowledge-sharing through seminars and conferences.
Outside of his professional life, Dan had a passion for languages and was fluent in English, Ukrainian, and Russian. He was intellectually curious and enjoyed staying engaged through continued education, attending seminars and courses well into his career. Dan was also a dedicated community member and supported international cultural exchange through the Ukrainian American Trading Company, which he founded to assist CIS delegations.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents Peter and Anne Kitt. He is survived by his beloved family, who cherished his intellect, strength, and sense of humor. He leaves behind his loving wife Carol, two months shy of their 59th anniversary. He is also survived by his two daughters Kandace Huebner (Christopher) grandsons Cameron and Keaton and Kristen Rutherford (Jason) granddaughter Riley and grandson Gavin. He was also survived by his sister Victoria (Jim), nieces Katie Welsh (Alex) and Jillian Gent (Terry). And numerous cousins and dear friends.
His wisdom and steadfast presence will be deeply missed.
