Elvira Vizcarra

Elvira Holguín Vizcarra, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished pillar of her community, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on November 18, 2025, in Houston, Texas. She was 93 years old.

Born on March 9, 1932, in Punta de Agua, Chihuahua, México Elvira was the daughter of Panfilo Holguín and Matilde Orozco. She grew up on her family’s ranch, where she spent her childhood riding horses, playing among the cows, and splashing in the nearby river. Although she attended school only through the third grade so she could help her family on the farm, Elvira’s life would become a testament to determination, resilience, and boundless love.

Elvira met the love of her life, Heriberto Vizcarra Villela, at a dance hall in Juárez, Chihuahua, México. Their connection was immediate, and they soon began building a life rooted in faith, hard work, and family. Married on June 1, 1950, they welcomed many children and supported their growing family through tireless work—Elvira as a housekeeper traveling across the border to El Paso, often cleaning homes with up to twelve bedrooms. Together, they ventured into entrepreneurship, opening a small market, La Conchita, and later a taqueria, El Babalú, known for its delicious flautas, burritos, and comida corrida.

In 1973, their lives took a new direction when her husband, Heriberto was offered an opportunity to open a restaurant in Houston, Texas. Embracing the chance for a better future, they moved their family to Houston, Texas leaving behind many relatives but carrying forward their deep-rooted traditions and values.

Elvira worked for approximately 25 years at Memorial City Hospital in the department of nutritional services, starting as a dishwasher and working her way up to sous-chef. She was praised for her hard work and earned recognition as Employee of the Year on two occasions (1982, 1994), a reflection of her dedication and strong work ethic.

Faith was the foundation of her life. She was an active and loyal member of her church community, first at St. Stephen and St. Jerome in Houston and later at St. Bartholomew in Katy, Texas serving as a communion minister; participating in baptismal preparation; leading prayer groups and retreats; visiting the sick; and attending Bible study. Known as a role model of both her family and her faith community, she guided others through her kindness, compassion, and unwavering devotion to God and the Virgin of Guadalupe.

At home, she was happiest in the company of her family. She loved gardening, praying, cooking tortillas, buñuelos, and tamales. She also enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and knitting. Her kitchen and her presence were the heart of every gathering.

Elvira is preceded in death by her parents, Panfilo Holguín and Matilde Orozco; her husband, Heriberto Vizcarra Villela; her siblings Salvador, Teresa, Ramona, Aurora, Panfilo, and Mariana; her sons Heriberto, Adrian, and Manuel; son-in-law Agapito; and granddaughter Margarita.

She is survived by her beloved sister, Elisa “Licha”, and her brother, Manuel.

She leaves behind her cherished children: Dolores, Ramon, and his wife Elizabeth; Adrian, Alfredo, Connie and her husband Daniel Sr.; Laura, daughter-in-law, Margarita, all of whom were close to her and part of her extended family circle including Mary and Charles Eubanks.

Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Elizabeth and her husband Raouf, Julio and his wife Eileen; Claudia, Virginia, Gracey, Monica, and her husband Joel; Daniel Jr and his wife Taylor; Sarah and her husband Benjamin; Alfredo “Fred” and his wife Kayla; Victoria, Anthony and his wife Brittany.

She was blessed with many great-grandchildren, including Audrey, Nicole, Victoria and her husband Alex; Nydia, Sarah, Karim, Fateema, Dominic, Shayla, Jeremiah, Samuel, Miguel, Mateo, Noah, Abel, Anthony Jr., Aiden, Ali, and Ignacio — the newest light in the family and a continuation of her enduring legacy.

She is also survived by her great-great-grandchildren: Logan, Lincoln, Xela, and Theodora.

Elvira’s legacy is one of faith, strength, service, and unconditional love. Her life touched countless hearts, and her memory will continue to guide and inspire those she leaves behind.

May she rest in eternal peace. She will always live in our hearts.

Elvira Holguín Vizcarra, madre ejemplar, amada bisabuela, tatarabuela y valioso pilar en su comunidad, falleció pacíficamente en su hogar rodeada de su amorosa familia el 18 de noviembre de 2025 en Houston, Texas. Tenía 93 años.

Nació el 9 de marzo de 1932 en Punta de Agua, Chihuahua, México, sus padres fueron Panfilo Holguín y Matilde Orozco. Creció en el rancho de su familia, donde pasó su infancia montando a caballo, jugando entre las vacas y chapoteando en un cercano arroyo. Asistió a la escuela primaria hasta el tercer grado. Por su inteligencia en las matemáticas, su padre la necesitaba para ayudar a su familia en la leñeria. Se casaron el 1 de junio de 1950, dieron la bienvenida a nueve hijos y sostuvieron a su creciente familia con esfuerzo incansable. Ella trabajó en El Paso, Texas, a menudo limpiando casas grandes con hasta doce recámaras. Juntos emprendieron varios negocios, abriendo primero una tiendita, “La Conchita”, y más tarde una taquería, El Babalú, conocida por sus deliciosas flautas, burritos y comida corrida.

En 1973, sus vidas tomaron un nuevo rumbo cuando a su esposo se le presentó la oportunidad de abrir un restaurante en Houston, Texas. Aprovechando la posibilidad de un futuro mejor, se mudaron a Houston, Texas dejando atrás a muchos familiares, pero llevando consigo sus tradiciones y valores profundamente arraigados.

La fé fue el fundamento de su vida. Fue miembro activa en su comunidad de la iglesia; una de sus parroquias fueron St. Stephen y St. Jerome en Houston, y más tarde en St. Bartholomew en Katy, Texas donde sirvió y participó como ministro de comunión, y en la preparación bautismal; trabajo en grupos de oración, retiros, visitando a los enfermos, y asistiendo a estudios bíblicos. Conocida como modelo a seguir tanto de su familia como de su comunidad, guiaba a otros con su bondad, compasión y devoción inquebrantable a Dios y a la Virgen de Guadalupe.

Ahora ella de la mano de Dios a ido a reencontrarse con sus padres, Pánfilo Holguín y Matilde Orozco; su esposo, Heriberto Vizcarra Villela; sus hermanos Salvador, Teresa, Ramona, Aurora, Pánfilo y Mariana; sus hijos Heriberto, Adrian, y Manuel, su yerno Agapito y su nieta Margarita.

Le sobreviven su querida hermana, Elisa “Licha” y su hermano Manuel.

Deja atrás a sus amados hijos: Dolores, Ramón y su esposa Elizabeth, Adrian, Alfredo Vizcarra, Connie y su esposo Daniel Sr., Laura, y su nuera Margarita, todos ellos cercanos a ella y parte de su círculo familiar incluyendo a Mary y Charles Eubanks.
