Heather was born in Dixon, Illinois, and grew up in Marathon and Laurens, Iowa. She earned her Bachelor of Arts from Buena Vista University before making her home in Houston, Texas, where she continued her education and received her Master of Science in Educational Management from the University of Houston. There, she built a life rooted in family, friendship, education, and service to others.
Heather dedicated 28 years to Alief Independent School District, ultimately serving as a principal before retiring. Throughout her career, she poured herself into her students, families, teachers, and colleagues. She believed deeply in people and had a gift for helping others recognize their own potential.
That same spirit carried into every part of Heather’s life. She was honest yet kind, quick-witted, generous with her advice, and always ready with encouragement or a laugh. She was a light to many and someone people naturally turned to for guidance, perspective, or simply a listening ear. Heather accepted people as they were, loved without judgment, and had a remarkable ability to see the good in others.
Heather loved spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed trips to the beach, being near the water, returning home to Iowa to visit family and friends, good food, baking, and settling in to binge a good show. Football was also an important part of her life, especially cheering on her Iowa Hawkeyes, which often sparked plenty of good-natured banter between her and Victor.
Heather was so excited to be promoted to “Gigi” when Maven came into her life. Their bond was incredibly special, and becoming a grandmother brought Heather a whole new kind of love. Though their time together was far too short, the love they shared was immense, and being Maven’s Gigi was one of Heather’s greatest joys.
Heather is survived by her husband, Victor W. Turner; her daughter, Ilana Firebaugh, and her spouse, Christopher Cook; her son, Victor J. Turner; her granddaughter, Maven Cook; her father, Larry Firebaugh; her brother, Alan Stacy; and her mother-in-law, Anna McNabb; along with extended family, friends, former colleagues, students, and many others whose lives were touched by her.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Sandra Firebaugh, and her grandparents, Patricia McKenna and Albert McKenna.
Heather was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, friend, educator, mentor, and confidant. She will be remembered for her wisdom, humor, kindness, and the way she made people feel supported, valued, and loved.
Her light will continue through the many people she encouraged, guided, laughed with, and loved throughout her life.
