Jan Thurston Gillespie passed away on October 31, 2025, at the age of 77. He was born on October 2, 1948, in Greenville, South Carolina to Milton George Gillespie and Gussie Deaton Gillespie.
Jan came from a family deeply rooted in the grocery business. The Gillespie family played a pivotal role in expanding and overseeing the success of the BI-LO grocery chain throughout the Southeastern United States. Jan began working at BI-LO at a young age, eventually pursuing a business degree from the University of Georgia. While at UGA, he became a member of the Acacia Fraternity and built strong professional relationships within the grocery industry. His career advanced steadily, and he ultimately served as Vice President of Human Resources for BI-LO. After the company was acquired by Ahold, Jan relocated his family to Katy, Texas, where he accepted the same role with the Randalls Food Chain.
Though he was an only child, Jan grew up surrounded by a large extended family of cousins, aunts, and uncles. His professional life reflected his commitment to leadership, community service, and mentoring others. After retiring from the grocery industry, Jan transitioned into real estate and became a well-known and respected realtor with REMAX Cinco Ranch in Katy. Known affectionately in the community as “Jan the Man,” he was more than just a realtor to many. He was a trusted friend and a generous supporter of numerous local causes. He received multiple professional honors throughout his career, including the prestigious True Grit Award after his courageous battle with sepsis in 2008, which led to the removal of his colon. Despite the health challenges he faced, Jan continued to give back to his community and serve others.
Jan was a faithful member of Kingsland Baptist Church, where he regularly attended services and also taught Sunday School. His faith was a guiding force in his life and an inspiration to those around him.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of over 50 years, Sarah “Sally” Francis Gillespie, as well as his parents, Milton and Gussie Gillespie of Seneca, South Carolina. He was also preceded in death by his brother-in-law David Rushton, nephew Chad Rushton, and several uncles, aunts, grandparents, cousins, and fraternity brothers.
Jan is survived by his son Michael Gillespie and his wife Sheri, along with his grandsons Blake and Preston Gillespie, all of Katy, Texas. He is also survived by his daughter Carolyn Drechsel and her husband Ryan, and their daughters Taylor and Quinn of San Antonio, Texas. Additionally, he leaves behind his sister-in-law Sudie Rushton and niece MaryCatherine Rushton. Jan will be deeply missed by many longtime friends from the Randalls Grocery Chain, colleagues and clients from his years at REMAX Cinco Ranch, and countless others whose lives he touched through his kindness and generosity.
Jan enjoyed a full and meaningful life. He was a dedicated Georgia Bulldogs fan and a passionate follower of SEC football. He loved gathering with friends for breakfast at Whataburger, celebrating anniversaries with Sally at Taste of Texas, and most of all, spending time on the beach. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina held a special place in his heart, and many cherished family memories were made there over the years.
Jan's life was marked by faith, perseverance, and an unwavering love for his family and friends. His presence, humor, and strength will be remembered always.
A memorial service officiated by Reverend Mitch Maher will be held at 3:00pm, at the Katy Funeral Home (Dignity Memorial) with visitation for family and friends to follow. A private graveside service for the family will be held at a later date at the Houston National Cemetery.
