John Michael Husch

John Michael Husch, 81, of Katy, Texas, passed away on August 5, 2026.

Born December 13, 1944, in Freeport, Texas, John grew up in the Brazosport area and graduated from Brazosport High School before earning a degree in English from the University of Houston.

John proudly served his country in the United States Army for 14 years, trained as both a Vietnamese and German linguist. His service included wartime duty in Vietnam and Thailand, followed by assignments in El Paso and San Angelo, Texas; Ansbach, West Germany; Monterey, California; and a final posting back in San Angelo. In Germany, he stood alert watch along the East German border through every season the weather could throw at him — an experience that left him with a lifelong aversion to camping of any kind. His service was recognized with decorations earned during his Vietnam-era service, including the Vietnam Service Medal with four Bronze Service Stars, the Army Commendation Medal with 1st Oak Leaf Cluster, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Good Conduct Medal with four Bronze Clasps, the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.

After leaving the Army, John built a career as a bookkeeper and accountant, working for BES and later putting those same skills to work helping his wife Cheryl run her tailoring business. In the late 1980s, he was ordained a Catholic Deacon, serving at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Lake Jackson, where he became known for sermons parishioners still remembered years later. He also found joy on stage with the Brazosport Little Theater — now Brazosport Center Stages — bringing the same warmth and humor to community theater that he brought to everything else.

John was the beloved husband of Dovie Husch, who survives him. Together they made a home in Katy for nearly 28 years — hunting for treasures at antique shops and markets, building a cherished cookie jar collection, and rarely turning down good Tex-Mex and a margarita. He was previously married to the late Cheryl Ann Husch, who preceded him in death in 1995.

John was the father of Byron T. Husch — whom he nicknamed "Troop," a nickname Byron returned in kind by calling him "Master Sargent," always good for a laugh between them — and grandfather of Logan and Tyler Husch. He was the son of the late William Husch Sr. and Minnie Husch, and brother of the late William Husch Jr. the late Patricia Havlik, and Mary Byfield (surviving).

Above all, John will be remembered for his big, unfiltered sense of humor; for mowing the lawn in loafers, dress socks, and a button-up shirt because looking cool was never the point; for popcorn balls and Toll House cookies on the first chilly days of the year; for decking out his home in a blaze of colored Christmas lights every single year — a love he passed straight down to his son; for a lifelong love of animals, from Pete the Siamese cat to Precious, his beloved "doggy doodle"; and for teaching his son, alongside Cheryl, that everyone is green — that color and background mattered far less than character.

He is survived by his wife, Dovie Husch of Katy; his son, Byron T. Husch (wife Christina); his grandsons, Logan and Tyler Husch; his sister Mary Byfield, his nieces Karen Byfield, Sarita (husband Larry Marshall), and Jennifer (husband Jim Gamblin, daughter Nikki, and sons Dylan, Clay, and Will), and nephews Jay Havlik, Mark Havlik, David Havlik (wife Kelly and daughter Kaitlyn). He was preceded in death by his first wife, Cheryl Ann Husch; his parents, William Husch Sr. and Minnie Husch; and his siblings, William Husch Jr. and Patricia Havlik.

A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by a funeral service from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., on August 19, 2026, at Katy Funeral Home, 23350 Kingsland Blvd, Katy, TX 77494. Interment with military honors will follow at Houston National Cemetery from 2:15 to 3:25 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Brazosport Center Stages or the Wounded Warrior Project.
