Linda Kay Reitan, born November 21, 1945, in Lincoln, Nebraska, entered into rest on November 11, 2025, in Katy, Texas. Her story began in the warmth of a close Nebraska family shaped by the guidance of her grandparents, Cecil and Lois Ward, and the steady love of her parents, Harlan Dale Ward and Helen Marie Ewing. Their influence lived in her every day, and he carried the values they instilled in her with quiet grace.
On July 20, 1968, Linda married the love of her life, William C. Reitan. Their marriage was a true partnership built on devotion, laughter, and the kind of love that grows deeper with time. Together they raised their children, Dawn Diane Reitan-Brockman and William Christopher Reitan, who remained the greatest joys of her world. Linda created a home filled with encouragement, understanding, and the gentle reassurance that her family was never alone.
A proud graduate of the University of Nebraska, Linda devoted many years to teaching elementary and pre-K students. Her love for teaching, especially teaching children to read, shone through everything she did. Her own love of reading was reflected in the countless children's books she collected for her children and, later, for her grandchildren. In time she chose to become a full-time stay at home mother and wife, offering her patience, presence, and constant support to her family. She believed that patience was one of the most meaningful gifts a person could offer, and she lived that belief every day. Whether in a classroom or at her kitchen table, she had a way of making people feel heard and capable. Her grandchildren, Ainsley and Finn Brockman, were the light of her later years. Watching them grow, learn, and step into their futures filled her with pride she spoke of often and with deep emotion. Their journey into college was one of her proudest moments, a milestone she celebrated wholeheartedly.
Linda’s favorite color was yellow, a reflection of the warmth, brightness, and quiet optimism she brought to those around her. She loved reading, sewing, and the simple beauty of flowers. Red roses reminded her of the University of Nebraska, a place she held close to her heart throughout her life. She never missed a chance to cheer for Nebraska Football or the Houston Texans, and she lived each season with the hope and enthusiasm of a true fan. Her favorite song, “Stand by Me,” echoed the loyalty she gave so instinctively. She stood by the people she loved with unwavering devotion.
Linda is survived by her children and grandchildren, and by her brother, Larry Dale Ward, all of whom will forever cherish the tenderness, strength, and wisdom she gave so freely. She is reunited with her husband, her parents, and her grandparents. The thought of them together again brings comfort to those who miss her here.
In honor of Linda’s lifelong loyalty to the University of Nebraska, her family welcomes donations to the university’s scholarship or athletic programs. She contributed to the Huskers every year, confident that supporting students and her beloved university could make a difference in lives beyond her own.
Linda’s life was defined by love that asked for nothing in return, by patience that steadied those around her, and by a quiet courage that carried her through every season of her life.
Those who knew her will continue to feel her presence in the lessons she taught, the kindness she shared,
and the memories that will never fade.
