Mary Perry Dodson, a devoted mother, educator, and passionate conservationist, was a lifelong advocate for knowledge, nature, and community. Raised in Highland Park, a neighborhood of Dallas, Texas, Mary’s early years were marked by a deep love of language and learning. She graduated from Highland Park High School and went on to earn her Bachelor of Arts in French from the University of Texas, where she was a proud member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority.
Mary began her professional life teaching French at the high school level, a reflection of both her love for language and her commitment to education. After starting a family, she transitioned into a successful career as a realtor, building strong connections with clients and colleagues through her warmth, dedication, and integrity.
Her true passion, however, was birding. A lifelong birder and tireless conservationist, Mary was a long-standing volunteer with the Audubon Society and contributed generously of her time and resources to numerous conservation organizations. Whether identifying warblers in spring or leading efforts to protect habitats, she brought both knowledge and joy to those who shared her love for nature.
Mary also had an enduring appreciation for literature and the arts. An avid reader, she found great satisfaction in sharing books and ideas with her many friends and book club members. She was active in the American Association of University Women, championing the rights and advancement of women. She also found joy in the camaraderie of playing bridge and engaging in civic and cultural events.
Mary was married to Angus James Dodson. Together they raised three children who carry forward her legacy: Liz Vogel (husband Jordan Vogel), Angus Joseph Dodson, and Mary Catherine Dodson. She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren: Caeley Maya Dodson, Hollis Adair Dodson, and Samuel James Vogel.
A gathering in her honor will be held on August 2, at 10:30, at Eagle’s Trace Erickson Senior Living at 14703 Eagle Vista Drive in the “Catering Room” in the Austin Square Building. At 1:00 p.m., her celebration of life continues at the Welcome Center for the Blazing Star Sanctuary (31975 Hebert Road, Waller, TX 77484), proceeding from there to the interment site.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Coastal Prairie Conservancy or the Audubon Society.
