Myrtle Marie Evans Fontenot, 73, of Katy, TX, passed away on Friday, August 9, 2013, after a lengthy illness. Myrtle, lovingly known by friends and family as Myrt, was born on March 27, 1940, in Roanoke, Louisiana, to Edward and Ollie Ruth Evans. She was the oldest of eight and grew up in Lake Charles, Louisiana, where she graduated from W. O. Boston High School. She went on to attend McNeese State University where she received a B.A. in Education. Myrtle taught 8th grade English, French, and Louisiana History in the Calcasieu Parish school system. The majority of those years were spent at Oak Park Junior High School in Lake Charles, where she taught many of the children in her neighborhood. Outside of the classroom, Myrtle's time was spent in complete devotion to the rearing of her two busy daughters, Sherry and Kay. She retired from teaching after more than 30 years, after which she was delighted to have time for the things she loved most, such as traveling to Katy often to spend time with her daughters and her three cherished grandchildren. The other things she enjoyed most were lunch dates with her two sisters, spending time at big, loud Evans family gatherings, reading, gardening, listening to her favorite musical soundtracks and exercising. Most of all, Myrtle was wholly devoted to Jesus Christ, and to the study of His Word. Her love and faith in Christ is the greatest of all the gifts she leaves to her children and grandchildren.
Myrtle is survived by her daughter Sheryl Fontenot Brooks and her husband, Don, of Katy, TX; daughter Karen Fontenot of Katy, TX; granddaughters Alexandra Brooks and Camille Brooks, and grandson Evan Brooks; four brothers, James Evans and his wife, Bonnie, Don Evans and his wife, Willa, all of Houston, Robert Evans and his wife, JoAnn, of Lake Charles, and Michael Evans and his wife, Gail, of Houston; two sisters, Carolyn Evans Gray of Lake Charles, and Julie Evans Boatner of Houston; Aunt Frieda Smith of Texas City, TX; Uncle Herbert Evans of Chicago, IL; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
She is predeceased by her parents Edward and Ollie Ruth Evans, and brother Charles Evans.
