Oscar was born in Havana, Cuba on October 8, 1943. He was the second son of Gustavo Moreno Lopez and Mercedes Rosa Hernandez-Daniel de Moreno. Oscar graduated from the Havana Military Academy in 1959. He met his wife of 50 years, Alicia Maria Rubiera, in Havana, Cuba and had the pleasure of escorting her to her debutante party in January, 1960. Though still in love, Oscar and Alicia were temporarily separated when Oscar’s family fled Cuba in August 1960, due to the Communist takeover, settling first in Miami and then in Columbia, South Carolina. Oscar volunteered for the Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961, although his ship never set sail due to the rapid failure of the operation.
Always, the gallant man, Oscar maintained his affection with Alicia through letters while she moved with her family to Miami and then Tennessee. A few short years later, Oscar asked for Alicia’s hand in marriage and they married in 1964 in Columbia, South Carolina. Oscar worked in the construction industry moving his way up to the executive level. He supervised in the building of power plants in Greenville, South Carolina, Carrolton, Georgia and Jefferson City, Missouri. He eventually began his own hardscape construction company O.A. Moreno & Associates in Houston, Texas. His company performed many projects for Texas Department of Transportation as well as in the commercial and private sector, such as Fiesta Texas, Sam Houston Race Park, Texas State Aquarium, to name a few.
Oscar was a devoted father and husband who loved finding opportunities to get together with family―particularly his grandchildren which were his greatest joy―and friends. He enjoyed cooking outdoors, fishing, hanging out with his friends at their favorite watering hole and spending time by the pool with his family. In his private time, he enjoyed nothing more than a good western. His ever happy and optimistic outlook on life will be missed by all who knew him.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife Alicia Maria and his brother Gustavo Luis Moreno. Oscar is survived by his brother Luis Francisco Moreno (wife Dianne Snipes); his four devoted children, Oscar Antonio, Jr. (wife Carole Mitterlehner), Alicia Mercedes (husband James Antonio Kahler), Elizabeth Maria (husband David Williston Thompson), and Michael Joseph (wife Jennette Lea Palcic); his beloved grandchildren, Lauren Elizabeth and Alexandra Maria Moreno, Alina Maria Kahler, David Alfonso and Isabella Maria Thompson, and Harrison James and Reese Davis Moreno; his sisters-in-law, Magali Rubiera Menocal (widow of Pedro G. Menocal), Josefina Rubiera Dugan (husband John Leonard Dugan) and Sandra Moreno (widow of Gustavo Moreno); his step-sister Maria Cristina Gonzalez Rojas (husband Arturo Rojas), his nephews, his always caring cousins and his extended family, friends and his faithful cat Michi.
