A memorial service for Roger Tanner, 64, of Katy, Texas will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20 at the Katy Funeral Home. The Rev. Dr. Daniel Schramm, Amazing Grace Hospice Chaplain, will conduct the service.
Mr. Tanner died Oct. 7, 2013 after an ongoing illness.
Born June 29, 1949 in Shreveport, La., he was a longtime journalist in Texas and Louisiana. He was markets editor for the Natural Gas Intelligence newsletter of Intelligence Press, having held that position from 1983 until his retirement in 2012.
He previously worked for The (Shreveport) Times and the Houston Post. While a student at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, he also held several positions with the Daily Reveille. His journalistic endeavors extended as far back as his high school days on the Fair Park Pow Wow, to junior high school for the Lakeshore Lines and even to elementary school for the Judson student newspaper, all in Shreveport.
He was a National Merit Scholar, a 1967 graduate of Fair Park High School and a 1971 journalism graduate of LSU, where he was a member of Sigma Delta Chi. Among his interests were music, motorcycles, reading, kayaking, dancing and travel. His recent overseas travels included trips to Italy, Russia, Mongolia and China .
Mr. Tanner was preceded in death by his parents, Rodger Llyod Tanner Sr. and Frances Marcelle Mahaffey, and his brother, Byron Tanner, all of Shreveport. He is survived by cousins: Sharon McDaniel of Nacogdoches, Texas, and a few distant cousins whose names were unknown to the publisher of this obituary at the time it was written.
Members of the Fair Park Class of 1967 will hold a memorial service next spring in Shreveport for their classmate, who was a faithful member of the class and who never missed a class reunion.
