Steven Adolphus Taylor was born on October 19, 1970, at the University of Chicago Hospital. A lifelong Chicagoan at heart, Steven was raised on the South Side, where, from the guidance of his parents, Adolphus ”Buck” and Lottie Taylor, he developed the strong values of family, hard work, and community that would guide him throughout his life.
Steven attended Providence St. Mel High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and a Master’s in Industrial Relations from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. He built a distinguished career as a Senior Human Resources Executive, working primarily in the chemicals, oil, and gas industries. He was respected for his leadership, professionalism, and dedication to mentoring others.
Outside of his professional life, Steven was a man of quiet passion and joy. He was an avid bowler and a proud member of the Thursday Night Men’s Petroleum League at Emerald Bowl, where he formed lasting friendships over many years. He also found great happiness behind the grill and in the kitchen. Steven was especially known for his holiday cooking marathons, often staying up all night to prepare family favorites like sausage dressing, gumbo, and banana pudding. His smoked ribs, burgers, and brisket were legendary among family and friends.
Above all else, Steven’s greatest pride and accomplishment was his family. He always said that his children were his proudest achievement, and he beamed with pride over the people they had become. His son, Steven, and daughter, Summer, brought him immeasurable joy, and nothing delighted him more than spending time with them and his beloved granddaughter, Charlotte Olivia. Whether bowling, smoking meats, or simply sitting and talking, his happiest moments were those spent surrounded by family.
Steven was preceded in death by his father, Adolphus “Buck” Taylor; his maternal grandparents, A.B. Patton and Molly Patton; and his paternal grandparents, Adolphus Taylor and Goldie Taylor.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Cicely Taylor; his son, Steven Taylor (Mai) and granddaughter, Charlotte Olivia; his daughter, Summer Taylor Johnson (Caleb); his loving mother, Lotte Taylor; his sister, Cheryl Taylor; his niece, Ravin Taylor; his nephew, Devon Jackson; his aunt, Louise White (Michael); and a host of cousins, extended family members, and close friends. He also leaves behind his cherished dog Benji.
Steven will be remembered for his warm smile, unforgettable sense of humor, steady presence, and generous spirit. His unwavering love for his family, his pride in their accomplishments, and the joy he found in life’s simple moments define the legacy he leaves behind. His impact lives on in the traditions he created, the lessons he taught, and the love he shared so freely. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
