Walter graduated in 1963 from E.E. Worthing High School, where he played football as a full back and wide receiver. Football was his favorite sport, and it was there that he earned the nickname “Skip.” Everyone who knew him spoke of his speed and love for the game.
Outside of football, Walter enjoyed many passions. He worked as a truck driver and loved to travel, exploring new places along the way. At home, his favorite activities included cooking, playing Bingo, and cheering on his favorite sports. He loved his broccoli, enjoyed cooking at the BBQ pit, and was known for his hearty appetite. When he was on a winning streak at Bingo, there was no stopping him. His favorite TV shows were Westerns, or “Shoot-’em-Ups” as he called them, along with Bonanza, Family Feud with Steve Harvey, and all things sports-related. He also had an appreciation for simple things—his favorite color, blue, was always a part of him and reflected the calm, steady presence he carried in life. At the end of the day, his loyal dog Nala was always by his side, happily sharing his leftovers.
Family was at the center of Walter’s life. He made frequent visits to Eagle Lake and across town to stay connected with relatives. He adored his grandchildren and was always ready to drop everything if they needed him. For 17 years, one of his most cherished traditions was giving each grandchild a piggy bank after Christmas and adding money to it throughout the year. In November, they would be given a hammer to break open their banks and enjoy their Christmas money.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Gibbs Sr. and Lillian King Gibbs; cousin Birdie; Aunt Samantha Gibbs Wilson; Aunt Olivia Gibbs; Aunt Ruby Gibbs; and son-in-law Charles Tyler Barbee.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 25 years, Carol Wall; daughters Brenda Rambo, Bonita Gibbs, Sharon Daniels, Alaina Barbee, and Jessica Wall; son Tony Madison; his beloved dog Nala; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Walter’s late-night and daytime phone calls will be dearly missed, especially hearing him say “Goodnight, I love you,” or asking his favorite questions, “Where you at?” and “What are you doing?”
To honor Walter’s love for his teams and his favorite pastime, the family invites everyone attending his service to wear Houston Texans, Rockets, Astros, or Bingo/lottery attire.
He now reunites with his mom and dad in heavenly, pain-free peace.
Eternal rest to you, Skip.
