He was born August 25, 1938 in Latvia, son of Alexander and Sylvia (Dore) Meijers. Joe grew up in Würzburg, Germany where he attended school. He later came to the United States at the age of 17 and resided briefly in Boston, MA with his sponsor before moving to Keene.
On June 26, 1965 Joe married his lovely bride, Norma “Jeannie” Blanchard.
Joe was best known as a hard-working man. Joe was employed as a Tool and Die Maker for 50+ years starting at Central Screw and then later retired from Timken (MPB). In between all the hours he worked, he also managed a wood cutting business for 25 years from 1970’s up until 2009. On an average he would split and deliver 100 to 120 cords per year to his devoted customers. It was said he did more work by 7 a.m. than most people did in a day. He was a kind and generous soul. Always had a smile on his face and who could not forget those beautiful blue eyes of his.
He had many interests and hobbies, such as watching western and war movies, learning anything about history, especially about the Titanic. He also enjoyed boating, hunting, fishing, candlepin bowling, and he also repaired TV’s and small electronics in his spare time.
Joe was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He cherished his time spent at Spofford Lake with countless cookouts with friends and family. Everyone was always welcomed. In addition, he enjoyed many cruises with his family and loved trips to the casinos, but his true enjoyment was spending as much time he could with his three grandchildren. They were his world. There is nothing he would not do for them.
Survivors include his daughter: Sherri Herrick and her husband Sean of Keene; his son: Eric Meijers and his significant other Julia of Lempster, NH; and three grandchildren: Molly Mohan, and twin grandsons Maxwell and Michael Howard.
He is predeceased by his loving wife, Norma J. Blanchard and in-laws, Raymond and Julie Blanchard.
Services will be held at the First Baptist Church, 105 Maple Ave, Keene, NH, on Saturday, October 22, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Burial will immediately follow at the Chesterfield West Cemetery, Poor Road, Chesterfield, NH. The family invites you to bring a story and a dish to share at the church hall following the burial for a time of refreshments and fellowship.
