He was born in Winchester, NH, December 29, 1942, the son of Stanley and Frances (Solasz) Kulas.
Mr. Kulas was particularly proud of his appointment to the United States Air Force Academy on June 27, 1960 and, following his father's example, his active duty service in the United States Air Force. He was released from active duty on December 13, 1962, continuing to serve in the Air Force Reserves.
He resided in Hadley, MA and Georgia for many years before returning to the family farm in Winchester in 1996 to care for his aged uncle John Solas.
Mr. Kulas was known locally as radio station WKBK's weekend talk show host for the past 17 years, where he was known as a vigorous defender of conservative American ideals and a repository of vast knowledge on a myriad of subjects. Never one to shrink from a spirited discussion, he was respected by his radio audience for giving air time to callers whose views differed from his. His choice of radio programming music always left his listeners wondering if they would wake up to polkas, martial music, or bagpipes.
In 2005, he won the N.H. Associated Press Broadcaster of the Year Award in “breaking news”. He earned a second award in 2008 from the N.H. Association of Broadcaster’s Golden Mike Merit Award for “air personality”.
Lesser known about Mr. Kulas was his generosity; although not blessed with material riches, he was always willing to help a friend, or a stranger, with his knowledge, advice, and time. It was said by those that knew him, he was a kindhearted person who could fiercely debate, then shake hands with a smile afterward.
He was a staunch Republican who especially loved to talk politics, interviewing many political figures in the country through the years.
Mr. Kulas was a Boy Scout leader for many years in the Hadley, Mass. area, and served on their Advisory Council for ten years. He was also a member of the Masons in Holyoke, MA; the Cheshire County Republican Committee; and a member of the Plante-Cieslak VFW Post 38 in Fitzwilliam, NH.
He is survived by his brother, Stanley Kulas and his wife, Gwen, of Clayton, NC; his sister, Pat A. Martin, of Cheshire, CT; two nieces and four nephews.
A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at 9:30AM in St. Bernard Church, 185 Main Street, Keene, NH. Burial with full military honors will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery, Richmond Road, Winchester. Family and friends are invited to call on Tuesday from 2:00 to 4:00PM and 6:00 to 8:00PM at the Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court Street, Keene.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mr. Kulas’ memory to thanksusa.org, providing academic scholarships to children of all branches of the military including Guard and Reserve forces.
