He was born in Tacoma Washington December 20, 1925, son of Briton John Potter and Agnes Brierley Potter.
He lived in Tacoma Washington, moved to England when he was a toddler and returned to Campton New Hampshire when he was 7 years old. He graduated from Plymouth High School in Plymouth New Hampshire in 1943 where he played football and was president of his senior class.
Allan joined the US Navy in 1944 and served as a ship fitter, Second Class. He received an honorable discharge in 1946.
He graduated from University of New Hampshire in 1950 with a degree in civil engineering. He played football in college and was president of the student council and treasurer of his fraternity.
Following college Allan worked for the B&O Railroad in Baltimore Maryland for 2 ½ years as a field engineer. He then worked for DuPont for 37 years in various marketing positions including product and export manager. He spent three years in Geneva Switzerland and five years in Singapore. While working for DuPont he made many business trips around the world. He retired while in Singapore as a Marketing Manager for Textile Fibers in the Far East.
Allan married Martha Dodds in June 1952. They lived in Baltimore MD, Seaford and Wilmington Delaware, Akron Ohio, Geneva Switzerland, Hudson Ohio, West Chester PA, Singapore, Pinehurst NC and Keene NH. Despite their many moves the family spent every summer at their cottage on Spofford Lake.
While living in Hudson Ohio he was one of the founding members of the Country Club of Hudson where he served as the treasurer.
He was dedicated to his family and enjoyed playing board games, cards and Ping-Pong with his children as well as teaching them to ski and play golf. He was a loyal Red Sox fan, an avid golfer and he and his wife enjoyed playing bridge with their many friends.
He is predeceased by his wife of 64 years and his brother Briton J Potter. Allan is survived by his four children, Nancy Thompson and her husband Rod, of Keene, Susan McGowan and her husband Tom, of Litchfield CT, Stephen Potter and his wife Charlotte, of West Chester PA and Bruce Potter and his wife Donna, of Spofford NH; and one grandson Colin McGowan and his wife Jessica, of Montclair NJ; his sister-in-law, Betsy Lane of Keene and several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday, September 22 at 11:00 am at the United Church of Christ, 23 Central Square, Keene, NH.
