

He was born in Thetford, VT, on August 31, 1934, the son of Leon G. and Carlie M. ( Bean ) Neff. He served for 4 years in the United States Navy. He was aboard the USS Pocono, a Naval Ice Breaker, up in the North Pole that kept the travel and shipping lanes opened during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Vermont.
He married Lorraine May Dompier, on February 16, 1957, in a ceremony held at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Keene. They were married for over 58 years, until her passing on March 11, 2015.
He worked for Tip Top Baking Co. and later for JJ Nissen Baking Co. as a regional sales person.
Mr. Neff was a member of the Bellows Falls American Legion, Post # 37. He enjoyed refinishing furniture and working in his gardens. He and his wife enjoyed their time together going on long rides and exploring new areas around the region. They were a fixture at every game his children participated in during their school years. And they were seen at many of their grandchildren’s games.
He was one of the founders of the Saxtons River Little League team. He loved to volunteer at the Saxtons River Historical Society, St. Edmunds and St. Charles Catholic Churches as well as in Bradenton Florida at Spring Training for the Pittsburg Pirates.
He is survived by his children: Carleen Ashley and her husband Chuck of Waterbury, VT, Alonzo W. Neff, Jr. and his wife Carol, of Chester, VT, Cheryl Sellner and her husband Kent of Niskayuna, NY, Laurie Neff of Keene, NH, Lisa Harmon and her husband William, Sr. of Saxtons River, VT, Linnea Davis of Swanzey, NH and Mary Schemm and her husband Robert of Whitehall, MD; 12 grandchildren: Nicholas Ashley, Samantha Ashley, Weston Neff, Ellen Neff, Andrew Sellner, Katie Hanatow, William Harmon, Jr., Sarah Alderman, Benjamin Davis, Rebecca Davis, Amanda Bassetti, and Christopher Schemm; 3 great grandchildren: Landen Alderman, Jacob Hanatow and Sophia Bassetti; a nephew: Robert E. Neff, Jr.; and three sisters: Patricia Bosclair and her husband Norman of TN, Margie Fogarty of GA and Edna O’Connell of FL. He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years: Lorraine M. Neff; a daughter: Catherine Neff, two grandchildren: Ashley Sellner and Matthew Davis, as well as his two brothers: Leon G. Neff, Jr. and Robert E. Neff, Sr.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at Saint Bernard’s Church in Keene at 10:00 am. Calling hours will be Tuesday, March, 15, 2016 from 5:00 - 7:00 pm at the Fletcher Funeral Home. Burial will follow the services at the St. Charles Cemetery in Westminster, VT.
