Her parents, Howard C. and Francise E. (Appleton) Cutter proudly welcomed their daughter into the world on May 25, 1936, in Peterborough, NH. A lifelong resident of Keene, NH, Cynthia was raised by Howard and Fran (King) and was a 1953 graduate of Keene High School and attended Keene State College.
Cynthia’s life and career were guided by an unending desire to learn, to ask questions, and to stay as informed as possible. She began her career at the Keene Sentinel and the Monadnock Shopper, later joining WKNE Radio as a receptionist. Through dedication and curiosity, she rose to become station manager and a trusted voice across the Monadnock Region, best known for her program Close Up. Cynthia had a gift for thoughtful conversation and a genuine interest in people, politics, and the world around her. After her time at WKNE, she worked at Braden Printing, established CB Property Management, and helped with her husband Malcolm’s business, Call Smiley Paper. With radio always close to her heart, she returned to broadcasting on WKBK with Talk Back with Cynthia & Friends, creating a space for open discussion of community and political issues - an expression of her belief that understanding comes from listening, learning, and staying engaged.
Deeply committed to her community and local government, Cynthia served on the Keene City Council for more than 20 years. She was also a devoted member of the Keene Kiwanis, where she was always ready with a “happy dollar” to share the joys of her life. Through her years of public service and contributions to local radio, Cynthia became a well-known and widely respected presence in the community she so dearly loved. Keene truly had her heart.
In her leisure time, Cynthia loved travel, taking cruises, decorating her Victorian dollhouse, and was an animal lover, especially her cats and dogs. She took great pride in caring for her yard and working in her gardens.
Family brought Cynthia her greatest joy. She delighted in hearing about the lives and adventures of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Thanksgiving held a special place in her heart, especially the time spent making pies alongside her granddaughter and great-granddaughter. Christmas mornings were equally treasured when the entire family gathered, and Cynthia lovingly passed down her unique breakfast bake—a tradition now carried on by many family members in their own homes.
Her compassionate and caring voice will be greatly missed by many in our community.
