Dale was born on May 8, 1958, in Keene, New Hampshire, at what was then The Elliot Hospital on lower Main Street — just three days after his future wife, Rebecca. He was the son of Angelo Victor Montrone and Evelyn Elizabeth Gove Montrone, both of whom predeceased him.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Rebecca Roentsch Montrone; their daughter, Krista Rae Montrone, and her partner, Dylan Cuseo; his brother, William Montrone and wife Sandra Montrone; his nephew, Tyler Montrone and wife Katie; his grandnieces, Juliette and Scarlett; and his stepmother-in-law, Mary Roentsch.
Dale grew up on Queens Road in West Keene and attended Symonds School, Keene Junior High School, and Keene High School. A proud member of the Keene High School Stage Band under the direction of Robert Cummings, he played saxophone and was actively involved in the performing arts. During his senior year, he served as President of the Keene High Drama Club and worked as stage manager for its productions. He graduated in 1976.
He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the L.C. Smith College of Engineering at Syracuse University in 1980. A man of faith in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, Dale was actively involved with The Navigators during his time at Syracuse University, forming convictions and friendships that shaped the course of his life.
Dale built a distinguished career spanning more than three decades in the telecommunications, computer, and semiconductor industries. He began his engineering career with the National Security Agency in Maryland and went on to hold technical management positions at Raytheon’s Microelectronics Division, where he established gate array platforms and memory compiler technology.
He later contributed to several venture-funded startups, including Kendall Square Research, where he served as manager and technical contributor for the KSR1 supercomputer VLSI development, and Maze Technology. In 1989, he joined Hewlett-Packard, managing development of memory system integrated circuits for the 700 and 7200 series workstations. From 1993 to 1997, he was instrumental in establishing Mentor Graphics’ intellectual property business unit and managed its microprocessor design and development center.
In 1997, Dale joined TranSwitch as Director of Worldwide VLSI Development and was named Vice President of Technology in 2007. In his later years with the company, he was responsible for Operations and Telecom Engineering.
In 2009, Dale and Rebecca returned to the Keene area to assist during Rebecca’s father’s declining health. After retiring from engineering, Dale joined Rebecca’s business, Wondrous Roots, on Roxbury Street in Keene. There, he brought vision to marketing, photography, and visual identity while also working hands-on in the production of virtually every batch of skin creams and lotions. His creativity, strength, and steady presence remain woven into the fabric of the company.
In recent years, he devoted himself to community life, serving on the boards of Hannah Grimes and Ashuelot Concerts.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dale was known for his quiet kindness and gentle presence. Neighbors often remarked on his gentle face and the warmth he carried into every interaction. He was an exceptional cook — a truly gifted chef — and took great joy in preparing memorable meals for family and friends. He loved golf and fishing. He valued simple pleasures, meaningful conversation, and time spent with those he loved.
Dale will be remembered for his quiet strength, technical brilliance, creative eye, generous spirit, steadfast faith, and unwavering devotion to his family.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Dale’s honor on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Elm City Church, 76 Railroad Street, Keene. All are welcome.
