He was born in Keene, NH, September 27, 1949, the eldest son of Norman and Melba (Costello) Sweeney. He grew up in Keene attending local schools and was a graduate of Keene High School. Dan was known for his love of athletics on the KHS football field, baseball field and basketball courts. In addition to contributing to multiple wins, he was one of four athletes honored to represent KHS on the Memorial Day Parade Coca Cola float.
Mr. Sweeney was also an avid skier and volunteered at Round Top Ski Area in Vermont for the national ski patrol with his father Norman Sweeney and his younger brother Thomas Sweeney.
Mr. Sweeney was a dedicated employee of New England Telephone, later Verizon Telephone for 37 years. He became one of the top Central Office Equipment Installers and Training Specialist working to set up, and update the company’s routing stations.
In Daniel’s personal life he enjoyed hunting, lake and deep sea fishing which he shared from a young age with his father and later with his three sons Michael, Matthew and Jake. He also was a skilled builder and built his home from ground up in Northfield, NH. He did all the framing, electrical, plumbing, masonry and finished carpentry. He took great pride in his home and providing for his family.
In addition, he did various projects for his children, ranging from building a deck with his son Michael at his daughter house, to sharing his talents by teaching his children to do electrical, and building. He came from a generation where if you needed something done, you did it yourself. He proudly passed this legacy to his children.
He is survived by his children, daughter Marcie J. Wells and her husband Michael Wells of Keene, three sons Michael D. Sweeney of Bradenton, FL, Mathew E. Sweeney of Claremont, Jake B. Sweeney of Claremont NH; his grandchildren Michael Snyder Wells, Madison M. Wells, Meredith M. Wells; great-grandchildren, Carleigh Snyder and Olivia Marie Sargent; a sister, Kathleen J.M. Sweeney of Keene; a brother Thomas H. Sweeney of Gilsum NH; former 1st wife Jeanne Shaw of Bradenton Fl. 2nd wife Janice Bresell of Claremont and Uncle Robert Sweeney of Springfield, MA; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday, July 11, 2013 at 11:00 AM in St. Bernard Church, 185 Main Street, Keene. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Main Street, Keene. Family and friends are invited to call on Monday, July 8th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court Street, Keene.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mr. Sweeney’s memory to The National Spinal Cord Injury Association, 75-20 Astoria Boulevard, Jackson Heights, NY 11370.
