He was born in Cambridge, MA, on June 4, 1926, the son of Shirley Wilcox and Annette Bassford (McKnight) Harvey. He attended Brookline High School and graduated from The New Hampton School in Massachusetts. He received his bachelor’s degree from Tuft’s University, his master’s degree from Brown University, and did further graduate work at the University of Pennsylvania.
Mr. Harvey served the in the United States Air Force for two years during the time of the Korean War, earning the rank of Staff Sergeant, before his Honorable Discharge.
A school teacher by profession, he served on the faculties of the Rockport (MA) High School, the Community College of Temple University, and at Keene State College, where he was a member of the History Department from 1965 until his retirement in 1991. Also at Keene, he served on many committees and was Parliamentarian to the College Senate for fifteen years.
David Harvey married Mary W. (Wagner) Teeter on October 29, 2011 in a ceremony at the United Church of Christ in Keene. The couple traveled in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and along the Danube River in Europe.
Mr. Harvey was a member of the United Church of Christ in Keene for many years; he served on a number of boards and committees, including the Diaconate, the Music Committee, the Historians, and the Board of Delegates. He was also active in the Cheshire Association of Churches of the United Church of Christ, holding several offices therein, including that of Moderator. He served two terms as a Trustee of the Historical Society of Cheshire County and two terms on the Board of Friends of the Keene Public Library. He sang in the choirs of both the United Church of Christ as well as the Keene Pops Choir. He was also a member of the Retired Educators Association of Keene.
He is survived by his wife: Mary W. Harvey, his three sons – in – law: Robert B. Pike and his wife Nancy and their daughter Hanna M. Pike of Ocala, FL., Harold S. Pike, III and his wife Laura, and their children Heather S. Pike and Harold S. “Diddy” Pike, IV of Tamworth, NH and Mathew L. Pike and his wife Teri of Orlando FL.; three sisters – in – law: Shirley Hood, Margery Steady, Nancy A. Hood; his nieces and nephews: Karl Booth, Jonathon Booth, George Booth, Susan Page, Peter Jackson, Bill Jackson, Lyman Jackson, Craig Hood, Nancy Hood, Susan Hood, Michele Hood, Gregory Hood, Dale Hood, Paula (Hood ) Wayman and Jeffrey Hood; as well as a cousin Thomas Gonya of Keene.
He is predeceased by his first wife Mary Louise (Hood ) Harvey, who died in 2006.
Calling Hours will be held Sunday at the Fletcher Funeral Home from 5:00 until 7:00. A Celebration of Mr. Harvey’s Life will be held at 11:00 on Monday at the United Church of Christ, 23 Central Sq., Keene.
