She was born on December 9, 1921 in Marlborough, the daughter of Walter and Lucy (Mason) Clark. She was a life-long resident and proud recipient of the Boston Post Cane awarded to the town’s oldest citizen.
After graduating from Marlborough schools, Eleanor married and worked at Princess Shoe during WWII. She was also employed at Whitney Brothers and the Granite State Manufacturing Company before joining the Marlborough Post Office, serving nearly 29 years as a Postal Clerk.
Eleanor was an active and faithful member of The Federated Church of Marlborough. She held numerous positions and filled many roles including 43 years as the Financial Recording Secretary. She was a member of the Ladies Circle and the Evening United Group. She was committed to missionary work by knitting blankets and baby sweaters and organizing health and school kits and baby layettes. Eleanor was also a founding member of Church Women United of Cheshire County, an ecumenical Christian women's movement. She was the Membership Chair of the Historical Society of Marlborough and volunteered on the Artifacts Committee. She regularly helped plan and attended the World Day of Prayer and Women’s Republican Luncheons. Additionally she was part of the Marlborough Alumni Association, having served on the board and always going to the annual meeting.
Eleanor was known for never missing an important date. She sent cards for every occasion to those she loved: birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, and achievements. Eleanor rooted for her beloved Red Sox, and enjoyed reading. Her friendly and welcoming nature will not easily be replaced.
Eleanor, the matriarch of six generations, will be deeply missed by two daughters: Ilona M. Nason and her husband Edward of Marlborough, NH and Virginia R. Hipple and her husband Paul of Wilmington, MA, and a step son, Carl E. Russell, also of Marlborough; eight grandchildren and two step grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great-grandchildren, two great-great-great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
She was predeceased by her husband whom she married on December 19, 1952: Ernest T. Russell; son: Roger Williams; four siblings: Philip Clark, Margaret Clark, Rachel Troy, and Richard Clark; a step son, Norman Russell and former husband: Raino Williams.
Family and friends are invited to gather for a Celebration of Life Memorial service on September 29, 2018 at 11:00 am at The Federated Church of Marlborough, NH located at 16 Pleasant Street. There will be no public calling hours. Interment will be private at Pine Grove Cemetery in Marlborough.
