He taught English at several high schools, vocational schools, and community colleges, including Goffstown High School, Lebanon Junior and Senior High School, and Monadnock Regional High School in Swanzey before joining the English Department at Keene State College in 1967.
At Keene State College, his teaching focused on the American short story and literature by black authors. His scholarly work focused on the late U.S. Poet Laureate William Meredith, who was also a longtime friend and mentor. A scholarship for Keene State College students, The Fred Fosher Award for Excellence in Writing, was established in 2005 in his honor. He was named Professor Emeritus after his retirement.
