
He was born on December 6, 1928, in Bayonne, NJ, the son of Eleftherios and Calliope ( Alexander ) Michaelides. A graduate of Bayonne High School, he went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree from Georgetown University, an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a Doctorate in Education from Nova University.
He married Mary H. Loukides in St George Greek Orthodox Church in New Brunswick, NJ, in December, 1954. In 1966, the family moved to Keene. He was a professor of economics at Franklin Pierce College (now Franklin Pierce University), for 26 years, retiring emeritus in 1996,.
He was a member at St. George Greek Orthodox Church where he served on the parish council. He was a former Ward 5 NH House Representative, a member of Gordon-Bissell American Legion Post #4, a member of the Keene Senior Center and of the Keene Senior Swingers. For many years he served as a volunteer driver for veterans needing transportation to the VA Hospital in
White River Junction in Vermont. He was a passionate lover of nature, retiring often to Vershire, VT, where he and his family enjoyed hiking and swimming and the serenity of the surroundings, A favorite pastime was riding his tractor through the meadows and visiting with the neighbors.
In Bayonne High School, he was a member of the relay team that won a national championship. As track coach of an Elizabeth, NJ high school,, he was especially proud of his star sprinter, Ron Freeman. who along with three team mates won gold and bronze medals at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City
He is survived by his wife, Mary H. Michaelides of Keene; a son: Lee G Michaelides. and his wife Marga Rahmann of Norwich VT; two daughters: Nia Michaels of Seattle, WA and Adele MIchaelides Thomas and her husband Terry Thomas of Keene; a granddaughter: Alexandra Rahmann of Norwich, VT and Brookline, MJA., and a sister, Athena Alexander of Red bank, NJ.
In Lieu of Flowers, it has been suggested that memorial donations be made to a local charity, including The Monadnock Humane Society, 101 W Swanzey Road, Swanzey, NH 03446 and MAPS Counseling Services, 19 Federal Street, Keene, NH 03431.
The family plans an Afternoon of Remembrance in September.
