Harold “Chip” W. Atkinson, Jr., age 68, of Harrisville, NH passed away on Saturday, March 16, 2024. He died at home with his wife of 32 years, Stephanie and his dear friend, Sienna at his side to comfort him.
He was born in Cambridge, MA to Harold W. and Hannah Pickett (Ranke) Atkinson. He graduated from Lawrence Academy in 1973 and attended Keene State College.
Although he was born in the city, the country was where he wanted to live. His family spent summers on Lake Nubaunsit, aka Harrisville Pond, and Harrisville was where he chose to settle.
He was a self-employed carpenter and painter. In the early ‘80’s he worked with his good friends, Ron and Jay as “Bucket and Bristle”. His work evolved into carpentry and construction. He and Jay helped build each other’s homes. The end of his career brought him back to painting, with Sienna and his friend Chris. Throughout his career, his deliberate, thoughtful focus on detail was notable.
He was a capable handyman who was kind and generous with his skills. He was glad to help family and friends. His actions often spoke louder than his words.
He had a deep and abiding love for nature and wildlife. Whether hiking, cross-country skiing or snow shoeing, he was most content when he was in the great outdoors with his wife, and his dog.
He is survived by his wife, Stephanie, mother-in-law, Sheila, father-in law, Rene, brothers-in-law Scott, Glenn and Steve, sisters-in-law Alison, Linda, Laurie and Sue, nieces and nephews, cousins, and Godmother, Cynthia.
He was predeceased by his father and mother, his brother, Obie, father-in-law, Jerry and his dear friend, Jay.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, April 21 at 22 Pond Road, Harrisville, NH at 11:00 am. Burial at Island Pond Cemetery in Harrisville will be at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Chip’s memory to the Society for the Protection of NH Forests, The Harris Center, or a charity of your choice.
