He was born in Newton, NH, September 6, 1929, the son of Oshea Nathaniel and Daisy (Johnson) Twombly. He grew up on the family farm in Winchester, NH.
Mr. Twombly was an Army veteran serving during the Korean War.
Following his military obligations, he returned to Keene, NH, where he resided briefly until moving to North Swanzey where he resided for 55 years. He was a hard worker, working several jobs at a time, including providing custodial services for many years with the SAU 29 Keene School District and Keene State College, operating his own house painting business and working at Douglas Toy Company in Keene.
He was a member of the former Thompson-Hopkins VFW Post 2616 of West Swanzey and a member of the Loyal Order of Moose 478. He enjoyed square dancing, vegetable gardening and was an avid bird watcher. He especially enjoyed camping and time spent with his family.
He is survived by his children, Daniel L. Twombly and his wife, Kathleen, of Townsend, MA, Thomas J. Twombly and his wife, Diane, of Westminster, MA, Jeffrey S. Twombly and his wife, Jill, of Jaffrey, Jill A. Bean and her husband, Todd, of Swanzey; 12 grandchildren, Erik Twombly, David Twombly, Meghan Twombly, Joshua Twombly, Nicholas Twombly, Jordan Twombly, Emmett Twombly, Adam Twombly, Benjamin Twombly, Christopher Bean, Lindsey Bean, Cooper Bean; a great-granddaughter, Peighton Bean; two sisters, Harriett Bedaw of Keene, Thelma Bedaw of North Carolina; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Christine A. (Desrosiers) Twombly, who died May 1, 2012; four brothers, Maynard Twombly, Gerald Twombly, Charles Twombly, his twin brother, Herman Twombly, and a sister, Marion Farmer. A son, David W. Twombly, died in infancy.
A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday, January 27, 2014 at 10:00 AM in St. Bernard Church, 185 Main Street, Keene. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Main Street, Keene. Family and friends are invited to call on Sunday from 3:00 to 5:00 PM at the Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court Street, Keene, NH.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mr. Twombly’s memory to the Good Shepherd Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, 20 Plantation Drive, Jaffrey, NH 03452.
