Jane Elizabeth (Moore) Schnackenberg-Minto, 98, a resident of Keene, NH and former resident of Staten Island, NY, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, October 18,2014, following a period of declining health.
Jane was born November 23,1915 in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of Bruce and Louise (Abbott) Moore. She was a 1933 graduate of Curtis High School, in Staten Island, NY.
On February 14,1937, she wed her first husband Frederick C. Schnackenberg, Jr. to whom she was married for over 41 years and with whom she raised two daughters and two sons. Frederick served in the Army and the family were stationed abroad and spent many years in Germany and Morocco before returning to the US and settling in Maryland.
After the passing of her first husband, she married Robert J. Minto on February 22,1981. Together they were active members of Woodrow United Methodist Church in NJ, and enjoyed travelling to many destinations including Spain, England, Scotland, Mexico and all over North America, including Alaska.
Jane had a passion for art, perhaps inherited from her artist father. She learned from him the value of creativity and the beauty that can be captured in a picture. She surrounded herself with art, and enjoyed painting, especially in her later years - it was an expression of the life she had lived.
Jane had a generous spirit and was a great humanitarian who thought of many ways to help people in her community. Through her volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity, Planned Parenthood and Meals On Wheels, she was always giving to those around her. As a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Clinton MD, she founded a food pantry for the homeless called ''Jane's Pantry", which is still active, nearly 50 years later. Her work went beyond the local community to help those in developing countries with the Heifer Project.
Community was important to Jane, who, after the passing of her second husband, enjoyed living at Bentley Commons and being an active member of reading and discussion groups there.
Above everything, Jane loved her family. She was devoted to spending quality time with them and she loved attending ffamily gatherings and keeping in close touch with all of the Schnackenbergs and Mintos. She was a mother and grandmother to many, she loved them all unconditionally.
She is survived by her sister Barbara Jean Filmer of Barnegut, NJ; her two daughters: Judith A. Corcoran of Fort Collins, CO and Karen B. Proels and her husband Thomas of Daytona Beach, FL; two sons: William A. Schnackenberg and his wife Deborah of Plantation, FL, and Frederick C.
