Janet Findlay (Paige) Hurley passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early morning hours of Friday, March 27th, 2026, at the age of 79. She was born on May 22nd, 1946, in Sherbrooke, Quebec, and immigrated to the United States in 1962 when she was 16. Jan leaves behind her son, Ian Hurley, her daughter-in-law, Lauren Hurley, two granddaughters, Lydia and Michaela Hurley, a great grandson, Mason Hurley, her brother, Jim Findlay, her sister, Marilyn Salter, her cat, Tabitha Twitchet, and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She is predeceased by her husband, Henry Hurley, her son, Jamie Hurley, and her sister, Lois Roche.
Janet was a woman of strength, dignity, and selflessness. She was a mother, great and grand. To know her was to love her. To be loved by her was a gift that will never leave those who knew her. Jan spent her adult life helping to run Hurley Books, an antiquarian book dealership owned by herself and her husband, Henry. She was an active member of her community, serving on the Westmoreland rescue squad for over a decade, working for many years as a board member at the Westmoreland public library, serving as treasurer on the Park Hill committee in Westmoreland, and more. She raised two wonderful sons, and she never stopped learning. She could run a printing press, she could raise chickens and goats, she knew basic woodworking, she was an excellent weaver, she was an excellent chef and baker, and she loved her books. There are not many things in this world that Janet did turn her hand to at some point or another. She loved the arts, she loved the natural world, and she loved her family.
Jan left this world a better, brighter place than she found it, and that is a feat we can all only hope to strive for. Her legacy is her love. Her warmth, her musical voice, and her gentle touch will be forever missed, but she has gone home to be with her husband and son. Jan, we are all better people for having known you. Rest now.
A celebration of life will be held for Janet on May 23rd, from 1-4 pm, at the Summit Winery in Westmoreland, NH
