John Roderick McIntyre, 85, of Saginaw passed away on July 17th, 2026, after a heart attack. He was born on a farm near St. Charles, Michigan, and had a long life filled with love for family, friends, and world travel. He enjoyed a distinguished career as a Social Studies teacher in the Saginaw Public Schools.
John was the oldest of three children, and was raised on his parents’ farm. He graduated from St. Charles High School in 1958 and then earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Alma College in 1962. He also played football for both schools. After graduating from college, he took a teaching job with the Saginaw School District, where he taught in several schools, including many years at Arthur Hill High School until his retirement in 1997. Early in his career, he also earned a master’s degree from Central Michigan University. John served for many years on the boards of the Saginaw Education Association (SEA) and Team One Credit Union.
He met his wife Susan Ann (Hutchins) McIntyre while both were teachers at Central Junior High, and they were married in 1966. They enjoyed 59 loving years of marriage and built a meaningful life together. They had two children, Amy Marie and John Joseph (1969-2000). His son's untimely death was one of the great sorrows of his life.
They shared their family with international exchange students Cecilia Tapia Cespedes of Chile and Anne Louise Bormann of Denmark, who knew them as "Mom and Dad." They kept in touch over the years and were able to visit Cecilia and Anne in their home countries, getting to know their families and cultures better.
John was a loving and proud father and grandfather. His passions included travel, and he and Susan visited dozens of places covering every continent but Antarctica. He also loved golfing and reading about world history. He will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him.
John is survived by his brother Thomas McIntyre (Kathy), daughter Amy (Dr. William Stroup), and grandchildren Nora and Daniel. He was predeceased by his parents John and Catherine (Schoerner) McIntyre, his sister Mary Gath, his son, and his wife.
