

He was born in Schaghticoke, NY on May 30, 1930, to Frank and Mary (Race) Monty. He was raised in Alstead and graduated from Vilas High School in 1949. After graduation he served in the United States Navy on the USS Suison with his brothers Richard and Raymond, he later served on the USS Norton Sound and received the Good Conduct Medal, China Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and United Nations Service Medal. After an honorable discharge in 1954, as a GMSN, he returned home to his family.
On August 13, 1951, in a ceremony in Keene, he married his high school sweetheart, Marie Althea Mosher, and together they raised 5 children.
Throughout his varied careers, he worked hard to support his family; whether while working for the B&M Railroad, for Arthur Whitcomb, Inc., Twin State Bowl or during his 20 year career at Kingsbury Machine Tool Corp. Most recently he worked at McClay’s Market.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed spending time gardening, growing both vegetables and flowers and was known for his sizeable sunflowers. He was also a lifelong Red Sox fan. He was a member of the Gordon Bissell American Legion, Post #4.
He is survived by his wife of 60 plus years: Marie Monty of Keene, his five children: Candace Elliott and her husband James of Stoddard, Kevin Monty and his wife Kim of Stoddard, Melinda Lake and her husband Donald of Stoddard, Jill Wharton and her husband Robert of Richmond and Mary Elliott of Keene; 13 grandchildren: Samantha Brewer, Gary Weaver Jr., Jami Satterlee, Nathan Elliott, Selena Wilder, Joseph Lake, Tabitha Kilchewski, Cassie Michaud, Morgan Monty, Robert Wharton, IV, Brandon Wharton, Nicole Elliott, and David Elliott, III; 17 great grandchildren; and his siblings: Loretta Wilson, Roberta Bath, Raymond Monty, Lucille Mudgett, Yvonne Spaulding, Paul Monty Sr., and Betty Corbett.
His brothers: Dennis Monty, Richard Monty, Francis Monty, and his sisters Marie McLellan, Frances Wilson, Teresa Westcotte, Annette Monty and Victory Riviera all died earlier.
There will be no public Calling Hours. A private service, celebrating the life of John J. Monty, will be held at a later date.
