It is with heavy hearts we share the passing of Karen Ashley Almquist Bowen, 86, born on February 4, 1940, in Keene NH to Dr. Frederick and Lois (Whitaker) Almquist. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who passed on September 25, 2026 at her home in Gilsum, NH.
Karen graduated from Keene High School and worked for Monadnock Developmental Services, Monadnock Speedway, People’s Linen, New England Label, and served as the Gilsum Town Treasurer. She married the love of her life, Russell (Rusty) Bowen, on July 2, 1965, and together they raised their 4 children. She absolutely loved spending time with her family, showering them with love and warmth. Karen never met a stranger as anyone she met was immediately a friend. Karen also had many hobbies. She was an avid quilter and hosted many quilting groups creating beautiful quilts and wall hangings. In addition, she loved music and singing to her favorite country songs. She religiously followed the Red Sox tracking players and wins. In the early 70’s, her favorite pastime though was watching her husband race stock cars with the number she chose, #79, at the Monadnock Speedway and Claremont Speedway.
She is survived by her husband, Rusty, her brother, David Almquist, her sons David (Laurie) Richardson, Alan Edward Richardson Jr., and daughters Marcia (Kent) Richardson and Mary (Jim) Laliberte, grandchildren Zachary (Stephanie) Richardson, Elizabeth (Yari) McKeon, Joe (Bri) Laliberte, Isaac Cobb, and Alana Richardson, and several great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents Dr. Fred (Lois) Almquist, her brother John Almquist and sister Ann Hartt. Services will be held privately for the family. If you are so inclined, donations can be made in Karen’s name to the Dementia Society, dementiasociety.org.
