

He was born in Quincy, Mass December 16, 1934, son of Lloyd and Sigrid Hewitt. He graduated from Keene High School in 1952 and Keene State College in 1956. It was here that his love of tennis began and he and John Summers became the number one doubles team for the college. He continued to play tennis throughout his life and was a member of the Keene Racquet Club.
He continued graduate studies at the University of Mass Amherst, where he also taught English at the Amherst Middle School for four years. It was there where he had the honor of driving Robert Frost to Amherst College for “An Evening of Discussion” with the poet.
He married his college sweetheart and love of his life, Barbara Lees in 1957. They spent their first four years of married life in Amherst, Mass and then moved to Keene when he took the position of Teacher Consultant for the local schools in SAU 38. For the next year, Ken was a driving force behind the establishment of the Monadnock Regional School District, where he was Assistant Superintendent for 33 years. He was a member of the New Hampshire Association of School Administrators.
He was an avid reader and loved hiking, waterskiing, winter skiing, fishing and gardening. He enjoyed entering his produce at the Cheshire Fair. He and his wife loved camping from Maine to Florida and hosteled and backpacked throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and Europe. They spent the past thirty years summering in Wells, Maine.
Ken loved his family and always made sure he was at every one of his children and grandchildren’s events, be it ski races, horse shows, track meets, tennis matches, softball games, soccer games or recitals. No one was more proud than he of their many accomplishments.
Ken is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Barbara, their three children, Jeffrey Hewitt of Swanzey, Kim Croteau and her husband, Gary of Swanzey and Kristen Warner and her husband, Tom of Westmoreland, and five grandchildren, Bryan Stewart, Ashley Stewart, Kyle Croteau, Brittany Croteau, and Alyssa Hewitt. His mother, father and sister Janet died earlier. He leaves his brother Richard and his wife Barbara of Mansfield, Mass, their two sons Peter and Thomas, his brother David and his wife Linda of Fairfax, VA. and their two daughters Lauren and Katie.
Calling hours for Mr. Hewitt will be held Thursday evening from 5 to 7 at the Fletcher Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 33 Marlboro Street, Keene.
Services will be held Friday morning at 10 o'clock at the First Congregational Church in Swanzey Center. Friends are invited.
Burial will take place at the convenience of the family.
It has been requested, by the family, that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made in memory of Mr. Hewitt to Hospice at Home Healthcare and Community Services, 312 Marlboro Street, Keene, NH. 03431 or to the Monadnock Region Humane Society, P.O. Box 678, West Swanzey, NH, 03469.
