Leona E Whippie

She was born on July 17, 1928, in Keene, the daughter of Martin and Elizabeth (Seliskey) Zetkey at Elliot Community Hospital. She grew up in Keene and graduated from Keene High School in 1946.

She married Clifford R. Whippie at St. James Episcopal Church on October 27, 1950.

Mrs Whippie co-owned Whippie’s Poultry Farm, selling fresh eggs to local stores and individuals in the 1960s. Mrs. Whippie worked for McKenzie Farms Restaurant in food prep and also for the Grants Store in the bookkeeping department. Most people knew her as a teller for Cheshire County Savings Bank for over 20 years, including serving as head teller in the 1980’s.

She enjoyed home gardening, cooking for family, baking homemade bread and birthday cake decorating for her husband and children. She was famous for her rum-chiffon pie during Christmas celebrations at the bank.

Mrs. Whippie and her Husband belonged to the Young Farmers Association in Keene which held many Chicken Barbeques in the area. She believed in supporting the community and engaged in a number of volunteer services including assisting folks with their tax returns and donating her time, and her own garden vegetables, to the Community Kitchen. She was a member and officer with the Keene AARP.

She was active with the Grace United Methodist Church in Keene.

Mrs. Whippie is survived by her daughter Noreen Whippie of Keene, sons Wayne Whippie, and wife Rebecca, of Westmoreland, Eric Whippie, and wife Susan, of Sullivan; her grandchildren Kayla Whippie, Tyler Whippie, Emilia Whippie-Prior, Johnson Whippie, Kaitlyn Bryant. and her great grandchildren. Her husband Clifford Whippie and sister Stefana (Zetkey) Crandell died earlier.

Services for Mrs. Whippie will be held on Friday afternoon, May 2, 2014, 2:00 PM at Fletcher Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 33 Marlboro St., Keene, NH. Calling Hours will be held the hour before, from 1:00 – 2:00 PM at the funeral home. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Mrs. Leona Whippie’s name to Grace United Methodist Church, 17 Greenbrier Road, Keene, NH 03431.
