She was born in Jersey City, NJ, on June 5, 1922, daughter of Jeptha E. and Sarah M. (Hughes) Parker. She grew up in Queens, NY attending public schools there. She graduated from Jamaica Vocational School and began working in New York City after graduation. With the start of World War II she served her country joining the US Navy. She was stationed at The Philadelphia Naval Hospital, serving as a Pharmacists Mate.
She married James F. Snyder, Jr. on May 31, 1948. In 1951 they moved to one of the first planned communities, Levittown, NY. The house became a home with the arrival of six children, each contributing their own special personalities to the Snyder family. Margee was anything but idle in the community, working with the Early Trades and Crafts Society, and the beginnings of The Bethpage Restoration Project. On Long Island she was a communicant of St. James Church in Seaford. Margee was admired by all for her ability to embrace unique qualities in herself and others.
In 1971 the family moved to Elkins, NH. She worked for King Ridge Ski Area and the New London Trust Company. Elkins provided Marguerite with a tight-knit community in which her children thrived, whether on the town beach or in their respective schools. She was involved with Our Lady of Fatima Church in New London. In 1985 she moved to Swanzey, NH. She became involved in many area agencies that provide services for disabled adults. She served on the Monadnock Regional School Board helping to establish the Monadnock Community Connections School, an alternative program for high school students. She attended The Monadnock Covenant Church before moving to Littleton, NH. She was known throughout that community for her daily walks up Main Street. She moved back to Keene where she spent her final years.
She took great pride in her children and grandchildren and their accomplishments, the never ending learning process and discussing politics. She attended many Elder Hostels throughout New England, often serving as host at Pilgrim Pines Conference Center on Swanzey Lake.
She is survived by her children: Deb Snyder of Keene, James and his wife, Marie of Sugar Hill, Jeannine Snyder of Keene, Teresa Horne and her husband Eric of Marlborough and Michael and his wife Kristen Sharpless of Stowe, VT. She also leaves three grandchildren, Cory Snyder of Bozeman, MT and Grace and William Horne of Marlborough, a sister, Marie Tollini of Perkasie, PA, and many nieces and nephews. Her husband, James and oldest daughter, Marguerite, died earlier.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, January 16, 2016 beginning at 2:30 pm at the Fletcher Funeral Home. Committal services will take place later in the spring, in Elkins.
Although she loved flowers the family suggests donations be made in her memory to the Special Olympics of New Hampshire, in care of Monadnock Developmental Services, 121 Railroad Street Keene, NH 03431. Please write "Marguerite Snyder Memorial – NH Special Olympics" on the memo line.
