The skilled yet gentle hands of Mary J. Nelson 85 of Westmoreland, NH and a former resident of Keene, NH and Newport, NH, became still with her passing on Monday, December 25, 2017 at the Maplewood Nursing Home in Westmoreland.

Her parents, Joseph H. and Mary E. (Butler) Cheney, proudly welcomed their daughter into the world on July 6, 1932 in Marlborough, NH.

Mary grew up in Marlborough and was a 1950 graduate of Marlborough High School. While in high school, Mary excelled as a member of the girls basketball team, and was team captain in her senior year.

Mary’s work career reflected her enjoyment of interacting with young people. She worked for many years as a cashier at the Keene High School cafeteria, and later as an office assistant in the Student Union at Keene State College. She had a great relationship with many students on campus who would always seek out “Mrs. Nelson” for help with any administrative problems.

Mary’s skilled hands created many wonderful ceramic pieces. Her beautiful ceramic Christmas trees and loons are family favorites. She was also talented at crocheting, making beautiful quilts for her family as well. Mary also took great pride in tending to her floral and vegetable gardens, as well as baking wonderful treats for everyone.

Mary’s greatest joy in life was her family. Holidays, family events and vacations created many wonderful memories over the years. Her unconditional love, caring and kindness will always be remembered.

She will be greatly missed by many, especially her three sons, David E. Nelson of Keene, Earl D. Nelson of Marlborough, Mark E. Nelson of Stoddard; six grandchildren, Erica Taylor, Leslie Nelson Imonetti, Mark R. Nelson, Jessica Perra, Brian Perra, Mandy Johnson; ten great-grandchildren, Aubrey Taylor, Brendan Taylor, Logan Ritchie, Ryan Nelson, Skylar Nelson, Cayden Nelson, Sophia Johnson, Mark E. Nelson, 2nd, Meghan Taylor, Piper Imonetti; a sister, Jacquelyn Zack of Bedford, NH; and many nieces and nephews. Mary was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Earl C. Nelson on May 5, 2013; and a brother, Joseph E. Cheney.

Mary’s family would like to thank the wonderful and dedicated staff of the Maplewood Nursing Home for the kindness and care provided during her 9 ½ years as a resident there.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 06, 2018 at 11:00AM in the Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court Street, Keene. Rev. Donna Gage will officiate. Burial will be in the spring in the Evergreen Cemetery, Winchester. Family and friends are invited to call at the Foley Funeral Home on Friday evening from 5:00 to 7:00PM.

In lieu of flowers, for those who wish, donations may be made in Mrs. Nelson’s memory to the Resident Activity Fund at Maplewood Nursing Home, 201 River Road, Westmoreland, NH 03467; or to Patient Care Needs of Hospice, PO Box 564, Keene, NH 03431-0564.

Dave, Earl & Mark: Remembering your Mom, 'all the way back' to my Keene State days- she was always a ray of sunshine! I took time to view all the wonderful photos chosen to portray snippets from her well-lived life. Her warm smile, and incredible joy of her family is depicted in those photos. Cherished memories that make her seem still very close. May these memories that mean the most to you, live forever in your hearts. I am sorry for your loss,

To David, Earl, and Marky
It would be impossible to know a nicer couple than your Mom and Dad. As next door neighbors for many years, they shared stories about you with us and enjoyed watching our daughters grow up as well. For some time we also shared Rusty and Scooter. There is no easy way to lose a parent, but please take consolation in knowing that our memory of your folks brings back warm and happy feelings.
Our fondest regards, Norris and Jean Learnard
