He was born on September 20, 1918, in Weybridge, VT, to Charles Lyman and Mary Emily (Hamilton) Jewett. Growing up in Vermont, he was a 1936 graduate of Middlebury High School. He enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps in late 1940 and served for more than four years before his Honorable Discharge in 1945 as a Staff Sargent. Most of his service was in the Pacific theater. He was at Wheeler Field in Honolulu when that base was bombed at the same time as Pearl Harbor; he also spent many months on Guadalcanal.
He married Helen Potter, on June 26, 1945, in New Haven, VT. After working as a laborer for a few years, he entered the University of Vermont in the fall of 1948, graduating with the class of 1952 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Soon after graduation, he moved the family to Massachusetts. He subsequently returned north to settle in Marlborough in 1962 when he took a job as a Design Engineer at MARKEM Corporation. He retired from Markem in 1983, after 21 years with the company.
He was a long time member of the Federated Church of Marlborough, as well as a member of its choir and a former Treasurer of the church. He was always working on something around the home, building sheds, trailers or anything mechanical. His hobbies were reading, music, restoring clocks and gardening, but cultivating his family and the relationships within was his greatest pride. Spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren really brought him the most pleasure.
He is survived by his four sons and their families: Malcom R Jewett and his wife Wanda of Beavercreek, OH, David P Jewett and his wife Cyndie of Roxbury, Robert H Jewett and his wife Karen of Marlborough and Stephen L Jewett and his husband Tom Choinski of Boston, MA; 8 grandchildren: Philip Jewett and his wife Jennie of Bethpage, NY; Steve Jewett and his wife Sherry of Riverside, OH; Carrie Kelley and her husband David of Somersworth; Kate Jewett and her husband Mark Benson of Wallingford, CT; Sarah Neutra and her husband Justin of Marlborough; Matt Jewett and his wife Janine of Marlborough; Ryan Jewett of Newton, MA; and Jesse Jewett and his wife Shelly of Gilsum ; 11 great grandchildren: Corey Greer, Kelsey Jewett, Elena Jewett, Sophie Benson, Maya Benson, Chloe Benson, Vivian Neutra, Ruby Neutra, Nadine Neutra, Trey Jewett and Jace Jewett, and one sister: Shirley Badger of Cleveland, OH. He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Helen P Jewett; two sisters: Irene Jewett and Ruth Lang as well as his three brothers: Lloyd Jewett, Silas Jewett and Charles Jewett.
