He was born in Troy, NH, November 05, 1931, the son of George and Lottie (Harnois) Abare. He grew up in Troy attending local schools. He also worked at the former Bob’s Lunch in Troy during his younger years.
Mr. Abare was an Air Force Staff Sergeant serving during the Korean Conflict from December, 1951 until December, 1955.
He worked for 36 years in the hardware department at the former Sears Roebuck Store in Keene. He also worked as a cook with the former Dog-n-Suds Restaurant in Keene. Following his retirement from Sears, he worked for another ten years at the Wal-Mart Store in Rindge, NH.
He was a lifetime member of the Gordon Bissell American Legion Keene Post #4 and the Veterans of Foreign War Post 799 in Keene. He enjoyed working around the house, helping his wife with her flower gardens, and tending to his own passion, his vegetable garden. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and good friends.
He is survived by his children, Bruce R. Abare of Keene, Linda J. Russell of Keene, Gary A. Abare of Chicopee, MA; two granddaughters, Brianna Abare and Brandi Abare, both of Keene; two sisters, Bernice Fealy of Keene, Beverly Thompson of Florida; and several nieces and nephews. His wife of 49 years, Dorothy R. (Coffey) Abare, died May 23, 2005. He was predeceased by a brother, Glen Abare and a sister, Evangeline Martin.
A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at 11:00 AM in St. Bernard Church, 185 Main Street, Keene. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Main Street, Keene. Family and friends are invited to call on Monday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court Street, Keene.
