He was born in Bridgeport, CT, November 13, 1922, the son of Harold L. and Anne M. (Brady) Pitt.
In 1943, he received a Bachelor of Science Degree from New Haven State Teachers College, then served in the U. S. Army Air Corp in Italy until 1946. Following his military obligations, he returned to Bridgeport and married Doris DeRose, Dr. Pitt began his career as a math teacher at the elementary school level and moved on to teach statistics at Fairfield University, a Jesuit school in Fairfield, CT, before becoming a Registrar there in 1949. He returned to college, earning a Master of Science Degree in Education from Fordham University in Fordham, NY in 1959 and a Doctorate in Education from Fordham University in 1963. In 1964 he became the Assistant Dean of Arts and Sciences at Fairfield University and in 1967 was the first lay person to become Dean of the Graduate School of Education. He retired from Fairfield University in 1987.
A resident of Fairfield, CT for nearly 30 years, Dr. Pitt was a parishioner of St. Pius X Parish in Fairfield, and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council. He was active in the community and professionally, serving as chairperson of several municipal building committees, and as a member of accreditation committees reviewing other colleges. He was honored with the 1972 Distinguished Alumni Award by Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, CT.
Dr. and Mrs. Pitt moved to Keene 25 years ago. He was a parishioner of St. Margaret Mary Church, and a volunteer driver for cancer patients.
He is survived by: his son, Robert F. Pitt, Jr. and his wife, Jane E. Bickford, of Bethel, CT; a grandson, Thomas P. Pitt, his wife, Claire, and their son, Samuel Henry of Nashville, TN; a granddaughter, Margaret F. Pitt of Nashville; and many nieces and nephews from the Pitt and DeRose families. He was predeceased by his wife of 40 years, Doris (DeRose) Pitt in 1992, and his brother, Harold T. Pitt, in 2011.
A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday, May 21, 2012 at 11:00 AM in St. Margaret Mary Church, 33 Arch Street, Keene, NH. Family and friends are welcome. Burial with committal prayers will be held on Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at 1:00 PM in St. Michael Cemetery, 2205 Stratford Avenue, Stratford, CT.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Dr. Pitt’s memory to the Bethel Library Capital Campaign, PO Box 1027, Bethel, CT 06801.
The Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court Street, Keene, NH is assisting the family with the arrangements.
