He was born December 13, 1962, in Binghamton NY to G. Norman Bayly and Virginia (Simms) Bayly. The family moved to Keene in 1970, where Steven attended Keene schools, graduating KHS with the class of 1981.
He worked for many years in a lumber yard until discovering his true calling, archeology. Steve was never happier than when “digging in the dirt.” He was especially proud of his work on the Tenant Swamp site behind the new Keene Middle School, which is one of the earliest Paleo-Indian sites ever excavated in New England.
Steve was a loving father to his two children, and in recent years had also been housemate and companion to his own elderly father. He was a smart man with a great sense of humor, always quick with a witty remark. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include his father, of Keene, his children Addia and Forrest of Concord, his sisters, Patricia Cooke and husband Harold of Westmoreland, and Linda Bayly of Brewster, Ma.; a niece and grand nephew, Sarah and Ethan of Westmoreland, his former wife of 30 years, Kaari of Concord, as well as several cousins, and good friends he has known since his school days. Steven was pre-deceased by his mother, and by his stepmother, Barbara Bayly of Keene.
In accordance with Steven’s wishes, there will be no services at this time. A family interment will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Steven’s memory to the NH Archeological Society, PO Box 406, Concord, NH 03320-0406.
