Our sweet Mama went to be with Jesus on January 31, 2022. She was the strongest and most selfless person you would ever meet. She was born in Conroe, Texas on January 21, 1955. She graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in Austin, Texas and attended Abilene Christian University. She then went on to do an internship with Stanley Ship in St. Louis, Missouri, where she was one of twelve to be accepted into this program and became lifelong friends with that group, including Max Lucado. This helped develop her love for missions and sharing the gospel. She went on to do mission work all over this world, including Russia, Uganda, and Mexico. She married Joseph Nangauta on August 1, 1981. She was a proud military wife and loved serving that community at every base we were stationed. She was supermom and was central in all our childhood activities and memories. She was in the middle of it all – the homeroom mom, girl scout leader, taxi driver for sports, a personal videographer for our highly technical choreographed dances at our middle school sleepovers, the provider of all yummy snacks for the neighborhood kids and cousins, and leader of Cousin Camp Hoo Ha Ha. She struggled with many different health issues over the last several years and continued to fight no matter the pain out of her sheer love for her family. Mom was a lover of people, Jesus, singing, and a good casserole. She was a great storyteller, had an incredible way of making people feel comfortable, and boy could she make you laugh. Her 15 minutes of fame came from writing a poem for our dad while he was fighting in Dessert Storm. It was shared on local news stations and radio stations. She received an award from the commander from Fort Sill. She was quite proud of this poem but even more proud to provide my father and the troops with support and encouragement.
She is survived by her husband of 40 years Joe Nangauta, who has been a faithful caregiver and devoted spouse. She is also survived by her two daughters, Jo Anna Workman and Nikki Swan, their husbands Lyle Workman and Ronald Swan, and her five grandchildren, Blaine, Lathan, Trinity, Addisen, and Isabella. She is also survived by her sister Angie and husband Vance Temple, sister Jamie and husband Brian Hackney, and brother Wes Phillips as well as many nieces and nephews. As a woman who loved her family, she had a special relationship with her husband’s family and fully embraced and loved their rich and unique Chamarro culture. She was preceded in death by many grandparents and aunts and uncles who were faithful believers and pillars of faith in her life. She was also preceded by her parents Don and Gay Nell Phillips, her brother Bart Phillips, her granddaughter Abigail Workman, and her nephew Corban Hackney. Although she is terribly missed, we are so glad she is now fully healed and worshipping our Savior alongside our precious loved ones.
In Lieu of Flowers please consider a donation in her memory to Pregnancy Help 4 U or Texas Baptist Homes for Children.
