He grew up in a humble home, the eldest of three boys where he learned the value of working hard, a strong sense of humor and family love and loyalty. His school days were filled with many friends, participating in the band and enjoying his 1957 Apache Truck which he added an 8 track tape player and speakers. His love of vehicles continued for many years enjoying his corvettes the most.
Sports of all kind came easily to Gary but he thoroughly enjoyed hunting, water skiing, tennis and bowling which he was seen as exceling at often “beating” everyone who dared to compete with him.
Gary worked in the technology field as a software engineer and was someone who was in great demand due to his experience and work ethic, but his work colleagues truly enjoyed Gary most for his keen sense of humor and ability to always bring laughter to those around him.
On April 11th, 1986 he married the love of his life, Linda Gail Gilbert, combining their family of six. He enjoyed attending Sherina’s Color Guard routines, coaching Tommy’s little league baseball and attending his plays, going to Gwen’s art shows and seeing Vanessa’s band performances. Together they were known as “The Host” and enjoyed opening their home to many family holidays, weddings and family reunions creating fabulous memories for all their family and friends. Their favorite vacation was to visit Las Vegas, where they got married to try their hand at cards, see the many shows and visit the surrounding landmarks.
He was a steadfast Dallas Cowboys fan and it did not matter if his “Boyz” were winning Super Bowls or having a down year he supported them, collecting numerous souvenirs, decorating his office and sporting their emblems on his trailer, vehicle and even his pool. He was also an avid bowler with over a 200 average consistent game, but what he enjoyed most was helping others to learn the game he loved and giving tips to perfect and improve.
He was always a favorite to all the kids whether it was their Papaw or Uncle Gary. They loved his sense of humor which often included unique puzzles that needed to be worked to get to the perfect Christmas gift or Halloween or Easter gifts bags full of goodies. He would proudly display their gifted works of art, their pictures and relished in their many accomplishments.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Linda Gilbert, and his mother and father Deloris and Earl Gilbert. He is survived by his four children and two sons in laws: Sherina Carey, Tommy Carey, Gwendolyn and Jared Hooste and Vanessa and Jerry McDaniel, his 8 grandchildren and their spouses: John Daily, Joshua Daily, Alyssa and Parker Igarashi, Logan Dailing, Savannah Dailing, Cameron McDaniel, Adam and Malayna Hooste and Hadley Hooste; his two brothers and sisters-in-law: Randy and Tammy Gilbert, Tim and Starla Gilbert as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, aunts, uncles and friends.
Gary freely gave of his time, always willing to lend a helping hand working home projects with his family, constantly adding upgrades to vehicles with his brother and supporting those around him in need. His laughter, joking, kindness and positive outlook on life will be greatly missed.
