Gregory Chester “Bear” Hupp, age 66, of North Richland Hills, Texas, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 1st with family at his side. Greg was born in Wichita, Kansas on April 4, 1955, to Chester Anderson and Olive Mae Hupp. He came to know Jesus as his Lord at an early age and was baptized as a born-again Christian in Central Christian Church in Wichita where he remained an active member with his family throughout his formative years. After graduating from Goddard High School in 1973, he attended the University of Kansas and Oral Roberts University, earning a BA in Theology and Historical Studies in 1978. While attending high school and college, Greg worked at Hupp Hardware in Wichita, Kansas, and was active with the Boy Scouts, earning the rank of Eagle Scout. He married his love, Cathy Karst, on December 19, 1981. Greg and Cathy were married for over 40 loving years.
Greg continued his education at Wichita State University, earning a BA in Mathematics in 1985. Early in his career, he valued his work experience at Credit Adjustment Company, developing his skills in database management, later growing in programming and systems architecture at Boeing and Sabre Holdings, Fort Worth, TX. In 1996, Greg joined Fidelity Investments and served over 21 years in mission-critical roles such as Director, Database Operations, and Project Management Director, until his retirement in 2017.
Greg was an active member of Northwood Church in Keller active in both local ministry and global missions. He enjoyed distance running where a highlight was completing the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC in 2010, with his son Danny, and other Luke’s Locker running friends. He was a lover of the outdoors and appreciated sailing and fishing with family and friends. Greg also enjoyed music and was an avid long-term listener of Classical 101, WRR radio station in Dallas.
During his retirement years, Greg kept active with his wife Cathy, reignited his talents in sketching and painting, enjoyed travel adventures, spending time with friends and family, and keeping up with their kids and grandkids… yet another full-time job! Greg kept his wonderful sense of humor even as he battled cancer, often improvising an apt pun to make others laugh and maintain perspective.
Paul’s words to Timothy are a fitting legacy to Greg’s lifetime of dedication to his family, church, and community “. . . the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” Greg was predeceased by his loving sisters Janice Hupp and Kathryn Hupp Patten. He is survived by his wife, Cathy Karst Hupp; sons Andrew Hupp (Ekaterina) of Austin, TX, Daniel Hupp (Sidney) of Colleyville, TX, and Jonathan Hupp (Rachel) of Oklahoma City, OK; granddaughters Elizabeth and Ruthie Jo; grandsons Chester and Henry; sister Linda Sue (Jim) Buccini of Basking Ridge, NJ; Cathy's parent's, Ray and Ruth Nelson; nieces Lisa VanHara (Ryan), Laura Sanchez (Angel); brother-in-law John (Kathryn) Patten, niece Leslie (Eliot) Lipps, nephews Burke Patten (Vanessa), and Matthew Patten (Cris); brother-in-law Tom Karst (Sally) and Doug Karst (Amy); nephews Ben Karst, Brian Karst (Amber), Stephen Karst (Karra); nieces Elizabeth Ruth Wagner (David), Katie Karst, Alan Karst, Matthew Karst; and loving cousins.
