James Hilary Ward, III, was born June 12, 1938, in Carbondale, IL. He grew up in Mt. Pleasant, TN, and attended college in Grinnell, IA, and Tulane Univ. in New Orleans, LA. While they were both studying abroad in Madrid, Spain he met Ana Rodriguez Homs, the woman who made him a better man and was the center of his life as he was the core of hers.
Jim enjoyed his various posts as a professor of Spanish, Humanities, and Latin American Culture at Texas A&M, Tulane University, and the University of Puerto Rico. His dry sense of humor and quick wit made for lively discussions. He was passionate about many things: photography, reading, writing, cooking, and genealogy. He was patient, insightful, and an amazing listener. Dr. Ward was a man of few words but those he used were carefully considered.
Dad was a man ahead of his times in many ways. He was building computers before they were in every household. he had a dark room and loved experimenting with prints. He greatly enjoyed finding out about his roots even before the current ancestry craze.
He died peacefully on Father's Day, June 21, 2020.
His generous nature extends beyond his life. He has donated his brain to help in the research to better understand and hopefully cure, Parkinson's disease and dementia.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ana and children Jaime (& Janire) in Puerto Rico, Juliana (&kyle Shiminski), in Texas, and Margaret (& Al Dennis) in Indiana. he was very proud of his grandchildren Alexander and Bryan ward, Andrew and Samantha Shiminski, and Mary Lynn and Mason Dennis.
