A native of the Washington, D.C. area, she attended the University of Maryland and George Washington University where she studied Chemistry and Statistics. She held different positions in the Federal Government and moved to Texas to be near family in 2012. She was an avid reader who enjoyed card games, board games, dominoes, bingo and storytelling with her grandchildren. An avid traveler, she lived abroad in Saipan, Germany and Greece over the years and enjoyed visits to Sedona, Santa Fe, her favorite locations along the Maryland shore and Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. She was known for her big smile and enjoyed the company of her friends and family.
She is survived by daughter Gayle Fetick (Kevin Fetick) and son Stephen Shoemaker (Karen Shoemaker); grandchildren Andrew Fetick, Lauren Fetick, Grady Shoemaker and Tommy Shoemaker; brother John Girvin (Louise Girvin); nieces Michele Crout (Al Crout), Jeanette Ross (Tim Ross) and their children Emily Crout, Albert Lee Crout, Rachel Crout, Jonathan Ross, Jaelyn Ross, Jenna Ross, and Jessica Ross. She is preceded in death by beloved husband Louis Shoemaker, parents John Girvin and Lydia Girvin, and nephew Jack Girvin.
Joan will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
